BM Rukus or 760 Ti?

My recent Skirmish/mini Skirmish pair apparently lit a fuse. I am in heat for the 'next' BM... I've been fondling the new 760 Ti and the full size Rukus. I like them both - the Ti goes well with my Skirmish theme, even if I am not sure about the M4 steel. The Rukus is just impressive. I like S30V and it's blade design - even if it is big. AXIS lock is a plus. Not so sure about the 760's Tanto design, however. A plus is that the Rukus has been out for a while - any bugs should be out. The 760... well, the ones locally are black boxed units. Decisions.

Any help - experiences, suggestions, general comments, would be appreciated. They are the same price locally, but I think the Rukus might just make it 'out da door' for a few less denaros. I thought about a 710D2, too... but - if I could swing that, a few more sheckles would get the larger knives. Size matters! Thanks!

I have the 760 and the M4 is really good steel IMO sharpens EASY and keeps it for a long time. If you go for the 760 buy it locally where you can inspect the knife first. Check the alignment, the lock up (on hard opening), and the detent before you buy it. Just might save you from the round trip to BM. I love mine but its been a PITA.

+1 on the 710 BTW, great knife

I have both and recommend the Rukus with a caveat. If you plan on keeping pretty much stock blade geometry the Rukus has an edge about 1/3 as thick as the 760 at about 1/3 the angle. It cuts way better and I'd very utilitarian in blade shape, carries well for it's weight/size, and is immensely strong. The 760 has great steel, as M4 gets incredibly sharp with excellent edge retention. The factory blade is so thick that it cuts terrible though. The titanium framelock keeps it way lighter than the Rukus, although the clip placement sucks. Mine has a terribly off centered blade, but it doesn't effect performance. I got my 760 reground by Tom Krein to a non tanto hollow grind with a .012" edge, and now it really cuts and is easy to sharpen. The Rukus is .017" from the factory with a high flat grind and doesn't require a regrind to cut like a real knife should. Also, my second hand Rukus has no fit and finish issues like my 760 did. M4 is great steel, unfortunately IMO you need a Krein grind to make the knife functional as a high performance cutting tool to take advantage of that great steel. I say get the Rukus if you aren't going to have the 760 pre checked by your online retailer for F&F issues and sent directly to Tom Krein for a regrind.

I have and use both. And I can't even tell model I like more, they are different breeds and it's hard to compare. With that said, go for the Rukus. Eventually you'll get a 760, I have no doubt. I'm sure you know by now that you have to have them both :D, but we all saw what happened to the Skirmish' availability after only 2 weeks from the day BM made it known that model will be discontinued. LFTi is a new page in a catalog, and it should stay there for at least 2-3 more years, while most of the people who needed the 610 picked it up earlier.
Future availability would be the only factor for me, if I had to make this choice.

my $.02 :)

i don't have a 760 yet, and would like ... but i agree everything said above about the rukus. i love the 710 and mini-rukus too

It's a b&m BM dealer I visit for louder - and brighter - play-pretties, too. I guess I'll re-visit him later in the day and look over the Rukus. I couldn't get excited about the new 760 at first - I was still considering the Skirmish models then. The 710 is just smaller... but still attracts my attention. I have to balance the checkbook this AM - my income won't permit both for now, so I suppose I'll more likely get the Rukus - just saw and fondled it yesterday for the first sight - and could find nothing I disliked. The 760 jumped out and I said "Tanto blade... barf!" the very first time I fondled it. Still, it looks nice... a later purchase, more likely. Thanks for the info.

I do not have a 760 so cannot compare. But I do have both a full size and mini rukus, both carried every day. Mini set up for left carry. They are both great cutting machines, with comfortable handles.
I like the ability to be able to customize them with different scales, although I have not done so yet as I have been unemployed for far too long to have any loose cash to blow on knife stuff recently.:(
Maybe I'll get lucky and land a frikkin job somewhere before Benchmade dis-continues the optional scales.

BM has discontinued most of the scales already. I think all they offer now if Winewood and black G10. They used to make some carbon fiber ones which I think was the best option.

Yes but they were kind of pricey. Not sure about the wood jobs. I know the wood grip on the left side of my 1911 is all dis-colored from being against sweaty skin all day long in this hot and humid environment. Figure the same thing will happen to wood scales on a knife, even through pants.

I thought I would get the black, but am perfectly content with the green / black combo.

Yea the wood would take a little more cleaning to keep looking good. Although my micarta scales need some maintenance every once in a while as well. Black G10 seems to be the best for keeping its looks.

Yes the green one that lies against your body, even through pants, tends
to be a bit darker than the opposite. I read somewhere about using WD40 on G10, and it seems to keep it looking alright.

Figure on my .45, I will just re-install the Carbon Creations carbon-fiber stocks. I really prefer the old fashioned look of wood (who's going to see em anyways, right?), but the one that rides your body will never look as good as the opposite.:(

Tanto shaped blades don't seem to lend themselves to EDC chores as easily as a drop point. Get the Rukus. I have a Mini Rukus and love it.
