I'm wondering which of these two knives would take the most punishment? I've done a search and read ALOT of great things about these, but I haven't seen a side-by-side comparison. Does anyone own both of these that can attest to either one being tougher than the other?

I will be using this knife for everything from camp cooking and back-up chores to every day cutting. This will be both my back-up woods knife next to my fixed blade and also my urban EDC most days.

I guess what I'm most concerned with is if, and I hope it never does, IF I get in a situation in the woods where I need to make tinder, construct traps, gut fish, baton, etc which will prevail? What if I get stuck on the side of the road broke down and need to put the knife through some heavy abuse cutting tubing or prying something loose which would I want?

Thanks!

DreamHawk,

I can only speak for the Skirmish which is a hell of a knife. Looks and feels great in the hand. Very solid construction.
Regarding the survival aspect: simplicity is king. Less parts that can fail usually make a better tool. It's easier to clean, too.

I only have the mini skirmish. Its a hell of a knife and its built real strong. Havent used it for prying and the such but I think it can stand up to a lot for a folder. If you want a real tough knife id suggest getting a fixed blade, they are better for that kind of thing. As a cutter the skirmish will not let you down=)

Thanks for the input guys! I guess I'll have to go down to the local knife shop and handle both since they seem about equal in quality.

If you are looking for overall "worse case" I would give it to the Rukus. Although I do not own one, that thing is a TANK. It is huge in hand and will do its cutting. Nice thing about the axis, is if you youtube it, you will find that it can still work after being shoved in sand and dirt. Also, if there was some way that the axis broke, you can shove a twig behind the bar to keep it locked.

+1 For the Rukus/Mini Rukus

Cool thanks for the info Chinese man. I was kind of leaning towards the Rukus because I like the over all appearance and blade shape a lot better. I thought the titanium frame on the skirmish might have made it the tougher candidate, I'm happy that may not be the case.

I have a fixed blade. I carry a Swamp Rat M6 when doing any kind of outdoor activity, but if I'm ever stuck without it (worst case scenario) I want a big folder as back up one that can take some abuse if shtf.

Another nod to the Rukus. You will not believe how much of a tank it is. I use mine for very hardcore work in my raid kit which involves cutting apart many things while carrying out search warrants.
In all fairness I will say this however, if your scope is not limited to Benchmade alone, you should really give the Spyderco Manix a try as well. The full-size version doesn't have the blade size of the Skirmish or the Rukus but it certainly won't seem like it as it easily matches the toughness of the Rukus and IMHO exceeds the 630. I was more than impressed handling it at the store and would have bought one had I not already had my eyes on a Mini-Rukus.

I have both the Rukus and Skirmish. Between the two, I'd choose the Rukus. I find the Skirmish blade shape too awkward for doing food prep. Lower the Skirmish edge to a cutting board, only part of the belly makes contact.
The Rukus blade shape is more like a kitchen knife. Albeit, I haven't tried food prep with the Rukus, yet.

the rukus is the love child of a ww2 panzer and a ferrari, I'd get the mini b/c the standard size is too big for edc (imo) a 10.2 oal is kinda like the whole "thats not a knife" thing... for those of you who don't know, that was a crocodile dundee referance... any way, the skirmish is bad ass too, but you cant beat G-10 scales, especially for what your planning on using it for... I once put liquid soap all over my hands and my knife, no slippage of any kind, thats pretty damn amazing if you ask me

I have a large Skirmish and it just seems like it would not be as practical for general camp duty as the Rukus ... the Skirmish does tickle my pickle though ... it carries well and is made with the "best o' the best" materials ... the knife is sleeeeek ...

I have both and the Rukus would be my first choice for outdoor use. The blade shape is more utilitarian and easier to sharpen (for me anyway), the Micarta and G10 is more comfortable after extended use (plus you can by different scales to customize it), plus I find the axis easier to use in outdoor situations. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks again for all the input!! I have decided on the Rukus. I will buy the skirmish, but at a later date. Does anyone know where I can look at some different grips for the Rukus?

Thanks guys!!! :D

If you havent bought it yet, take a quick look at the Spyderco Manix series. The Manix is also a tank and i think it fits the hand much better. It does not have an axis lock since it is spyderco, but it has one hell of a lockback.

Funny , because i use my mini skirmish for food prep a lot and I find it works really well. It cuts tommatos, meat etc really easily but I guess I just must cut differently or something.

i like both. my nod would the rukus. better fit for the job. it isnt that big (to me anyway), but the again i can make a large fix blade look small in my hand. go with the rukus

I've had both and now just the Rukus. I like the thicker grip it has, along with the G10/micarta. As far as the extra grips go, you can check on the bay and at www.knifecenter.com I installed some of the ivory micarta grips on mine and really like the look it has. Another thing about the Rukus is the flat grind of the blade, just makes for a better slicer.
