I have been a die hard BM fan since my first CQC7 probably 8-10 years ago. At least I hope it was that long because that would sort of excuse the volume of knives I have from both, leaning far more to BM than Spydy. I am also a fan of "partially" serrated knives as working in rescue situations I have found serrated edges priceless for seatbelt cutting, cable cutting, etc. Spydy's knives didn't seem to offer what I call "partial" serrations. It was either all, or most, or nothing. A couple of things happened recently that make me think my collection will be becoming a little more 50/50 in the future. Great! I need to spend more money.
I followed a thread about the "Native" being at Walmart for forty bucks and went to my local store to see if they had them. Sure enough, they did. I bought one and thought, "That's a little small for my EDC but I'll clip it to my coat pocket and see if I use it." I did but ended up giving it to my NKN, or non-knife nut, wife for her purse. Of course the next time I went to WM, I had to buy myself another. S30V for forty bucks? C'mon, thats not even a question. I then went to my local dealer, saw a plain edge Manix and bought it. I carried it as well as a Combat Elite RRF for handling the serration chores. Am I not a BM fanatic? I'm not even carrying one. One of the mailing lists I'm on had a special on the Manix with partial serrations for $102 including shipping. I couldn't pass that up. Anyone see where I'm going here?
During this time a package arrived from Spydy containing a DVD for the Sharpmaker that I had inquired about purchasing. They sent it along FREE! FREE! Who does this anymore?
My questions are these. Am I being drawn off to the dark side? Sould I seek Yoda for counseling? Have I lost my love for BM or am I only having an affair. I'd rephrase that last one but my NKN wife never looks at the forum. And when is my new Manix gonna get here? The UPS guy is getting sick of me meeting him on the street. I swore this was going to be the year I got control of the monkey on my back.:(
So who has switched from where to where and why? And should I start looking at the CR department? Oops! Got to go. Here comes UPS:D

This is a very difficult call. In regard to quality, Benchmade and Spyderco are neck in neck. Both companies have knives that are ground-breaking designs. I would give Spyderco a slight edge in having a greater number of innovative designs, but the two brands are equal in other respects.

Benchmade/Spyderco set the standard not only for American made knives, but for the whole world. Can you name a foreign knife brand that even comes close?

It really sucks that one can't say this about many other American products.

There is nothing wrong with liking both!! I am a HUGE Spyderco fan, but I recently bought a RSK Mini-grip, that I LOVE!! I am waiting for my Delica 4, and my 2 ZDP Delica's!! I have a SApyderco in my pocket as I write this, and I do everyday! I happen to like Spyderco MORE. You are just a knife knut, accept it, aqnd leave it at that!! Go buy yourself another knife!!! Have you seen the Carbon Fiber Military?! OMG.....

i tried BM's for the designs, but had to regrind the edges (too thick).

much happier w/ Spydies blades.

Personally I love both but, it's a struggle. You will probably go back and forth driving yourself crazy but dont wory you'll have a good time with it :D

Why limit yourself? Benchmade and Spyderco make great designs in different price ranges. Both companies have also discontinued great designs in the past.

Buy what you like.

My first Spydy not including a couple of Delicas and Enduras was one of the original CPM440V Militarys with the G10 handles. The frame screws were drilled directly into the G10 scales and because I am a compulsive tinkerer they soon stripped the G10 out. I think this would have happened eventually anyway but I am sure I accelerated the problem. After a couple of attempts with Loc-tite I put the knife away. I then got the bright idea to try to put a helicoil in the threaded holes and the knife has been tighter than a drum ever since. I may have held the problem against Spydy but I have seen their quality and customer support go nowhere but up since then. Later G10 knives, as you know, went to the fastener lined holes which I imagine solved the problem.
TKC, I looked at the carbon fiber Military and I think I'm in trouble again. Does it come partially serrated?:)
Damn that UPS guy! No knife for me.

Hey, enjoy the struggle. As long as it continues you have a good excuse to keep buying more knives! :D

Sorry Joe, but I already said that in the title of the thread. I guess my reason was my recent conversion to more of a Spyderco fan than I have been in the past. I was curious if anyone else had had a change of heart after chasing one brand as much as I had chased BM in the past. I have no interest in rattling my sabre, nice blade reference, for one brand or the other. I was also interested in why people changed. My reasons were the quality of the native and the surprisingly FREE DVD which I mentioned in my original post. Also the fact that Sal appears to read the forum and respond. That showed me something and probably got me looking at the Spyderco section of my dealer with a more open mind. I have told some people at my local dealers about the DVD and they all seemed surprised that a company would pass up profit to provide good customer support. Geez Sal, what kind of a business plan is that?
I don't care if people changed from Case to Buck to Gerber or whatever. Just that they changed and their reasons why.
I guess Spyderco and BM being the two biggest fish in the factory pond at their respective levels are naturally going to draw the most comparisons. They also happen to be where I am now, in my collecting. The BM Ruckus with the black partial blade also looks good to me so maybe I'm not to far gone. I posted to look for feedback and I've gotten some.
Now if the UPS guy would just get here and TKC hadn't told me about the carbon fiber Military all would be good in Westerly.
Have a nice week.:) :) :) :) :) :) :)

While I only have one BM, a 905, it's been seeing a lot of pocket time, because it continues to work for my needs. Do I like Benchmade more than Spyderco? No. But I sure do like some of their stuff...a lot!

Hi Brian,

Both Benchmade and Spyderco make good products. They both offer a variety of design, locks, handle materials, innovation and custom designers.

Many customers enjoy both companies.

Some ELUs go back and forth.

Regarding the "free" DVD, Spyderco does not normally give out free DVD's to everyone (Cold Steel does). I'm sure that Joyce, Spyderco's marketing manager, felt that you should have one.

Enjoy your knives, all of them.

I own both. Buy what you like and enjoy them on their own merits.

Agreed - I have both, EDC at least both (Spydie FRN Delica and BM Mini-Grip) plus a SAK as a minimum. I buy waaayyyyy more than that as well:D Last acquisition was an Al Mar SERE 2K. Before that, IIRC, a BM 530 and Camillus Blaze (my Heat needed a l'il brother:D ) Before that a Spydie Rescue 93mm. I'm getting impatient on my Spydie Delica 4 and Centofante 4 from one vendor and a Delica 4 and Endura 4 from another:) I was expecting my Delica and Cento 4 late last week or early this week.

Sorry Sal!
I didn't mean to make that sound like "for a free DVD go here" or "so, where is mine" thread. I was just surprised. Shocked, in fact. It sounds to me like someone is a blade fan too.
So far, on this years blade safari, I will be looking at your line more than I used to.
I love my Stryker and am still awaiting the partial Manix for rescue situations. I hope I never have to use it.
