I was really wanting to upgrade to a benchmade, Originally I was set on the Bailout 537GY-1 with M4 and aluminum handles but also really liked the 940 with green aluminum. well the other day I was at Bass pro shops and they sell a bunch of BM knives and I got to check them out in person which didnt help me at all. I didnt like the Bugout with aluminum handles from photos ive seen etc. but in person its just a beautiful knife and the M390 is a nice touch, then there is the osborne 940 which I think is also a beautiful knife with its green handles however they had the 940-1 there as well with the s90v and carbon fiber which I now also want. So I went home to think about which one to get and now I have come up with the solution of just saying screw it and getting all 3, Its going to be pricey but I know I will be happy with the purchase and they seem like they have an amazing warranty which helps justify the cost. however now I am reading about customs confiscating knives at the border and obviously Id not want to risk losing any of them or even all of them if I sent them together for their free sharpening. I assume they will send stuff like springs or pocket clips to you but what about bigger warranty stuff like a blade needs replacing?

Ive looked at a few retailers that I am condsidering purchasing from, warriors and wonders blades canada, house of knives and likely S&R knives as I can actually drive to their store, is it common for the retailer to do something with the warranty or have some way to ship and recieve it for you without getting screwed by CBSA?

I am hoping Id never need to use the warranty and Im sure I can do without them sharpening it and do it myself but there is always that what if....especially when dropping around $1000, it would be a great piece of mind to know that the warranty is there should I need it after spending that kind of money

Hi GT99. For Benchmade warranty in Canada you are mostly out of luck. I have heard that Benchmade will send parts to customers outside of the US. As a Canadian and Benchmade fan I have had one Benchmade held by the boarder officials. Warriors and Wonders has been a great supplier and will order a custom Benchmade from the Benchmade custom shop. They will deal with getting it into Canada.

Yeah it's unfortunate, it's nice having that lifesharp and warranty option, ive read about them replacing blades etc if needed and feels like in Canada we are screwed if something goes wrong, the warranty service is part of the justification of the price of the knives, its not like we get a deal in Canada.

But, it is what it is and I said screw it and picked up the 940-1 and the 535-4 yesterday. I really wanted the bailout as well and they had one in stock but only the serrated version, tempting but as I will have to sharpen them myself as I can't send in, I'm not sure I'd be able to sharpen that part so will wait for the straight blade. But have the others in hand and man do they feel nice and look great

BM will tighten pivots on knives coming into Canada, but the gorillas at the CBSA will just loosen them up so they drop open which should be illegal to modify something IMO. They will also ship up some parts. such as Omega springs, screws, pocket clips etc.
Reblades are now 30% of MSRP (not street price) so $105 USD for the 940-1 which when combined with the large butterfly tax makes it a bit harder to swallow IMO especially if you have to risk losing it if you need to get a reblade and don't have somebody in the USA to ship it disassembled, or in 2 packages for you. That being said, I have carried my 940-2 everyday for the last coming up to 6 years now and don't think I will ever find a better knife in the pocket for my tastes.

CBSA sucks, I wish there was a way around it, Canadians get screwed out of the warranty and lifesharp service. But loving the 2 I just picked up, the 535-4 is a really nice bugout but I love the 940-1 more, wish they threw on a blue thumb stud just to match the barrel spacers, kinda of like the bugout 535-3, Also prefer the deep carry pocket clip, seeing as we pay full price for losing the benefit of warranty and sharpening they should ship that to us for free as I heard they charge for that now lol

For Bailout, you break down sharpening to 2 jobs: sharpen the plain edge, then the serrated edge. For plain edge any stone works. Serrated edge needs thinner stone or rounded edged stone, or corner of stone either 90 degreee or triangular or rounded stone, that fits individual serration. So it is more work because of the small increase in skill needed.
I will have to sharpen them myself
Both your 940-1 and 535-4 are great knives, congrats on upgrading. The 940-1 s90v and 535-4 m390 are amazing steels in my experience, giving very long service between honing or stropping.
I recommend you read the BF Maintenance sub-forum stickies for beginning to build your sharpening skills (the ancients sharpened tools so it is a well understood commonly used skill).
Do not start practicing by sharpening your Benchmades, instead use some beaters, thrift store finds or kitchen / garage knives. After getting half a dozen practice knives sharp and resharpened by honing or stropping, then start by honing or stropping your m390 and s90v. For most EDC work, these steels are so good that after I put my new freshly sharpened edge on them, I have found myself happily honing / stropping them back to serviceable edges without the need to create a new edge again. Though I did have a used Contego m390 edge that seemed burned. I put 3 new edges on it before it gave the knid of service I expected from my other Benchmade m390 / 20cv knives (710-1401 n 940-1501).
Again congrats-

Lucky for me both came very sharp from the factory (heard some seem to bypass QC and are not great) will definitely check out the maintenance sub forum, I have some other blades I would practice on for sure 9cr, D2 which I've heard is harder than some other stuff like AUS8 etc so it would be good practice, for sure want to nail that down before even considering trying on my BMs, looked at a few sharpeners, want to practice on some whetstone and get that down eventually but for now I am looking at a worksharp precision adjust with the upgrade kit to start off with. Was between that and the spiderco sharp maker which also looks fairly simple

I'd say get good with stones on the AUS8 and 9cr and cheap kitchen knives, then D2, then the good stuff, where a diamond stone would give good service on m390 n s90v.

Sharpmaker is really sharpkeeper, great product, just placed 2 units in 2 other houses. I did expand one kit with Idahone coarse and medium stones, the other needs diamonds and SIC additionally. Worksharp Precsion Adjust was dropped on 2 grandkids about last xmas, great value, and upgrade paths outside factory upgrade kit (Elite) really expands versitily (parts designed by Burt from LeadingEdge and Hapstone at Gritomatic).
I came to BF only having used stones for a long time, but had a need to teach the kids, so to my field stone and the kitchen's Presto Eversharp 08810 was added, for family, in order, one then 3 more Sharpmaker's, KME, a couple Worksharp Ken Onion Editions- one of which is running the Blade Grinding Attachment, and the Precsion Adjust.
Just bought BYXCO "Manticore" Bench Stone 260micron 60 grit for an object lesson to oldest kids on freehanding with extra coarse, and for flattening Venev's 80 grit 1st gen KME bonded diamond stone. Going to add Benjamin's Mutt and a fine Norton to the free hand kit for the kids. A DMT high end diamond plate or Diemaker's bonded diamond will need to be on them though.

I'm Canadian and I've sent my Benchmades in for work a few times with no issues.

-940 went in to replace springs and a sharpen. No problems. 2019

-945 has been to Benchmade twice to fix the pivot. I believe the bushings were not flat which made tuning the action and blade-play impossible. No problems. 2022

I've send out bunches of knives out, probably half a dozen times.Never one seized.

That's good to hear, I've seen it mentioned a lot on various other forums of seizures, I am wondering what the odds are that it does get seized like 1 in 20? 1 in 100? I'd just be livid if I sent a few knives and then they don't return and I've lost $1000 worth.

I don't know about the odds of seizure but lets say there's definitely the chance.

Better yet, your local CBSA office maybe able to supply the stats that you require. :D☺️

I know if your in there neck of the woods drop off and pickup are possible depending the type of servicing.
