BM Warranty - VOID

Benchmade says on their website that your knife's warranty is void if the knife is opened. Just out of curiousity, how do they know if the knife has been opened??

Marshjr -

While i've not had to avail myself of Benchmade's W&R department yet, I have disassembled a few Benchmades for cleaning. I have not seen anything that would indicate that the knife had been disassembled.

In addition and more importantly, it is my understanding that the clause that you refer to is essentially "wiggle room" for the W&R department to avoid providing free reassembly service for the thousands(?) of technically challenged users out there who would take the knife apart and then send in a bag of parts to be "fixed".

Hope that helps,

Matthew

I have a BM Auto Reflex that decided to stop opening. I took it apart to see if i could fix it, but to no avail. I put it back together like i found it and sent it in for warranty work. Ive been told the wait is 20 days before they will fix it and mail it back and i am currently in the 'holding area.'

I just didn't want them to think i broke it and sent it back for repairs.

Yeah, the only way they could tell is if you couldn't get it back together again. Another point that hasn't been mentioned yet is if you strip the screw heads or the threads.

Yeah, as far as i could tell, it looked 100%, except for the fact that it doesn't work!!

It's a CYA thing for them, and a reasonable precaution. That said, they usually will help you out if you're honest about what happened and offer to pay up front. I screwed up a BM-43 and they were gracious enough to fix it for me. Just realize that they do have every right to tell you to take a hike or charge for repairs if you do mess something up by taking it apart.

Exactly.

There is no microchip sensor hidden in the knife that detects disassembly and records it.

If you take the knife apart and then reassemble it in perfectly, they'll never know.

But when a knife comes back in pieces or with such things as stripped screws, they start to get suspecious.

Basically, what BM doesn't want to have to do is pay to fix all the damage that unskilled idots do trying to disassemble their knives

If you attempt to unscrew the Torx screws without the correct drivers, it will be very evident to any keen eye.
