BM42 seems loose

Hi, I finally got a benchmade 42, as well as some others, here in CA. It's a very nice bali and super light with its Ti handles--I love it and am planning on getting a bm42as very soon!

But there seems to be a lot of play in the handles/blade and squeaks a lot while flipping. With each hand grabbing a handle, I can push/pull them apart to within 1/8 inch. Is this normal? Also, the latch is very hard to close when the blade is either in the open or closed position--it takes both hands just to close the latch.

I think I've heard of custom knife tools for benchmade knives but haven't seen them for sale. Can someone give me pointers about where to find a set and a decent price?

tia,

you might try some lube as well if your handles squeak. as always sending it ack to BM for refab is a god idea.. for BM42'sthe have a quick turnaround time since many people send em back.

Sounds to me like your's is a bit loose. You can tighten up the screws and fix that. If you don't want to wait for the official Benchmade Torx Driver Kit, you can get a Torx driver at any hardware store / home center. Take your knife along, though because BM has used two different sizes of torx screw and you've got to get the driver (T8 or T10) that matches your knife's screws. You'll need to get this driver anyway since these screws do need occational adjustment.

Watch the auctions. They do come up from time to time. They are, as you might imagine, very, very nice.

But, as Susan can tell you, if you're looking for something specific, you may have to wait.

And, while you're watching those auctions, Think W!

Actually, I find that the BM torx kit is actually a great deal and have yet to find a better deal anywhere. I've seen torx kits with the same pieces but the steel is very cheap and self strips itself while trying to loosen the screw. Just make sure you test the torx wrench before you buy it.

Just for clarification, does it void whatever warranty Benchmade provides to tinker with the screws like this? Speaking of which, does anyone know what sort of warranty there is? Just curious...

I think it would be silly for BM to void the warranty because of minor adjustments. The last thing I want to do is send my one and only decent pair back to them and wait week(s) to get it back.

Benchmade has stated before that the torx kit was made to allow for adjustments. The warranty is not voided unless you completely remove the screw in such a way that it is obvious to them. You can even back them out far enough to add a bit of lock-tite to make sure they stay where you want and still be in the realm of the factory warranty.
