Again the new guy needs help
smile.gif
My BM42A came yesterday (OK I love it!) but I need to squeeze the handles to close the latch in the blade out or folded position. Is this normal? Now I realise the Rostfrei POS with the latch that falls open (soon to fall off I'm sure) is not right but it seems to take a bit of actual effort to latch the 42?

Thanks in advance for your help

A tight latch is good, so it stays open or closed.

Having to squeeze the handles together to open it also means that the blade is going to stiff.

I'm also rather protective of what's in my pants.

Are the Rostfreis really just POS??? Some aren't that bad. And did you know Rostfrei just means Stainless in German. BTW you're a new guy and you don't know that the latch is supposed to be tight... and you own a BM42... u rich or something!?! I wish I could save enough to get a 42 in a couple months when I feel I'm good enought to own one...

I had a feeling Rostfrei meant "stainless"! Anyway, if it was a decent alloy of stainless, don't you think they would have stamped what kind it was?

Im not sure I understand this one. Yeah, with an OTF like a nemesis or maybe a BM30, I can see the potential for damage. But a 42 is just too big to swing around in your pocket and stab the jewels.

A little off topic, but check this out. Very funny..

the latch on mine is very tight as well which is a big plus. In fact the Jag I got the same day as my 42 (mon. night) has already stopped latching and the pins are about to fall out.

Balisong, the folding fixed blade.

Ive had a Jaguar for over 4 years and still use it. Both handle pins have been replaced, but for $16, its the best you can get for under $20. Very thick blade! Want a 42, but that a lot of cash for a knife.

ROSTFREI might mean stainless in Germany, but it is the word that companies in China stamp on blades to fool you into thinking they are German-made. Were ROSTFREIs actually made in Germany, they would no doubt be rather good little knives.

Jag's are made in Taiwan and I think companies like CRKT and to a lesser extent Gigand have show us that Taiwan can make a damn good knife for little money.

But, if it is unlatched and in the "tip up"
position it could defend the pocket from your hand.

Disco Stu...They also stamp Rostfrei on those cheapies because a lot of them get shipped to Germany.

I was in Germany about 2 years ago and remember seeing many of the same cheapies that are sold here. They had a couple of different variations in handle styles too, but were the same thing. I saw a lot of Herbertz knives there. Mostly the imitation BM's that they make. There were a number of knife stores I went into there, but I was usually disappointed to see that most of the stuff being sold was cr@p. I did pick up a speedlock while I was there, which I thought was awesome...I'm a little wiser now.

I got my first Bali a week and a half ago. I got a 42(I just wanted the best) and am now hooked. I am practicing A LOT and want to know if the 42 can handle it, or should I get a cheapo one to practice with? I got it brand new in 8 days for 100.00 and I hear that is good. hehe

OH AND LOVE THE NAME DISCO STU

I wouldn't worry about wearing out the bali AT ALL. but when you move up to aerial moves, you might want to practice over carpet or a bed or something. you dont want to scratch up your blade (but if you did, you have the lifesharp service anway, so your all set no matter what!)

I have to squeeze the handles on my 42 about .o5" to close the handles, and about .06" to open the knife (latch the handles). This is a good fitting knife that I'm very happy with. Even my custom bowie requires handle pressure to latch the blade open.

ROSTFREI actually means "Rust Free" so they could technically use regular steel as long as when they sell it to you it is free of rust.
