Since I got all of my Christmas money, I was looking into getting a BM42AS. But I do not want any of the ones with the "new" purple anodizing or the 440C steel. I know how to tell the anodizing apart but what about the blade? Are they labeled?

PS: anyone else gone back to the model 42?

i've heard something about the newest bm42's have the number 42 printed on the tang, so if that's the case, then i wouldn't be surprised if the tang also had 440c printed somewhere too...
but then again, this is not something i'm sure of.

The older 12c27 steel 42's aren't marked, but all the 440c steel 42's are marked as such.

I still use my #70/500 first prod. run everyday. sharpened swedge, and "rounded" on all the (unintentional) sharp edges.

It finally got UNALLIGNED!!! I can lock it open on both sides of the lock handle!!!!

I'm thinking of getting it "reconditioned" by Mer, (when he can get around to it...) with new washers, and probably a abrasive finish on the handles...???

It's best to ask if the particular blade is marked as the blade steel if buying online..

just to update my vocabulary, what's 'washers', 'milling' etc?

Washers in this case are small metal disks that act as a spacer betweent he blade and the handle.

Milling is the act of using power tools to, basicaly grind out of a metal bar what doesn't look like a Bali handle. (Sorry Mer, I know it's ALOT harder than it sounds;) )

Hope that helps...

Bah. Just buy a 43 and be cool like the rest of us Bowie nuts. You know the bowie looks sweet...:)

But for real, I would recommend going to a knife shop/store and looking around to see one in person. Its hard for cameras to catch the color right.

Also if you call a place like Knifezilla who has hundreds of them and ask nicely the little phone person might be nice enough to look through a few and find one you like. Better hurry though, they wont be in the Christmas spirit for much longer!

:D

Thanks for the help. I had heard the 440's were marked but wasnt positive on it. As for seeing one in person, there are no cutlery shops anywhere around me that have balisongs. I went ahead and put up an ad in the Wanted forum.
The bowie is a great blade and looks cool but its point is curved and for me, hard to use. I like the straight dagger point of the weehawk.

The new ones have the 42 just like the 47s and the 43s have there numbers and 440C on the blade. I haven't switched back to my 42as yet but I am having some problems with my 43 and it may be going back to BM here soon.

I have an older 42 that has '42' stamped on the tang but it doesn't say 440C. I got it before they started making them out of 440C but I didn't think they started stamping them with the model number at that time. Maybe I have a special one? what do you guys think?

Mines like that too. I got mine before they made them from 440 but it has the "42" stamped on the tang. Just one of those "Subject to change without notification." things. Not that it made any difference on my behalf. Plus I have two new 43's coming my way tomorrow!:) singing "Oh happy days!"

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!

What is the difference between 12c27 steel and 440c steel ??

I beleive the 12C is stronger than the 440. My BM43 made with the 440 began to dent in the area where the handle contacts the blade while my 2 year old and heavily flipped 42 shows almost nothing.
