I have a friend that has just recently started to show interest in knives. As with most people with new hobbies, he has jumped in with both feet. This is what he wants.

To spend between $150 and $200

A Titanium frame-lock

A good stainless (S30V or ZDP-189 or similar)

A blade length less than 3.5 inches

I recommended the first three that came to mind. The Mini-Skirmish, the Mini Cyclone and the Alias II. After a week or so of research, he is no closer to picking one over the others and came back to me for further advice. I don't know what else to tell him. They all seem equally excellent to me.

What can I tell him to help him pick just one of the three or perhaps another knife that meets his criteria? Which would you choose?

ive had a 635-its real nice-

ive still got a alias 2-smooth as butter-its a nice knife

my edc is a mini cyclone zdp--NOW THATS A KNIFE-lol

An Additional $40 bucks + Stalking Ebay/Sale Forums = A Used Sebenza?

Although out of the three, I would probably go with the Mini-Cyclone as well. To me the Bradley just doesn't have the same smoothness, strange since it is suppose to be a Seb imitation ... (or ass kicking personality of the cyclone).

How about one of those Buck Mayos? Haven't handled one but people say nice things...

I felt the 635 had a very thich edge. The Alias is nice, I now have two of the large. I have not had the chance to use the Buck Mayo, but I have heard great things. If I was in the market for another frame lock, it would be either a Sebbie, or a Buck Mayo.

Best of Luck,
John

mini-skirmish is very thick at the edge. not an efficient cutter unless you get it reground.

I'd say Bradley Alias is probably the best cutter of the lot.

You can also try Bladetech Rijbak (not sure why it's underrated / underpublicized here) but it looks good and within that budget.

Gary Grayley's selling his mini-cyclone with a Tom Krein regrind at a heckuva good price. I would grab that one.

I'd look at the Mini Cyclone. Awesome steel and quite rugged. I ended up selling mine, but don't think I gave it enough time in pocket.

My vote is for the 635. Thick edge sure, but with the LONG edge and recurve, it's an AWESOME slicer. You get more blade in a compact package with the 635 than any 4" knife I'm aware of.

I have the Ti-ZDP Mini-Cyclone. You'll be on budget, and if you want send to Krein Knives for a regrind, you'll have a whole new definition of the word "sharp".
