BM705 - A knife review... of sorts

Ever since I had received my BM710 some 2 years ago - a knife that I think is once of the nicest I have ever come across due the lovely recurve on the blade, etc, I have always been tempted to get my hands on it's baby brother - the BM705.

Well recently I managed to do so - Took me a couple of sales to do so but I eventually got one.

And ........... I was disappointed.

Yeah, I know - WOW... why? Well it has nothing to do with the manufacturing. Same axis lock, same g10, same 154cm steel. It's just that, compared to the 710 with that excellent recurve, this one looks like a toothpick!

I had the same "impression" when I tried the CRKT Point Guard. One was too big, one was too small. Sounds a bit like red riding hood here :D

At the time of ordering the 705 I already had 2 mini grips and a mini ritter on the way. I mention this because they are in the same size ballpark - 4" closed - A size that I have come to believe is "my size" for an EDC folder.

The handle on the 705 is excellent. No question there. IMHO it's the blade shape that lets the knife down. I beleive that they should have increased the depth and put the recurve on rather than leaving a plain straight edge. It just looks kinda "thin". Perhaps it's because I was carrying around the "meaty" ritter for some time before I got the 705... that may be... BUT, this knife just doesn't jump out at me like the 710 did, so I'm just a little disappointed.

It's still hell of a sharp though! and the blade alignment in the handle when closed is nigh on exactly dead centre - much more so than my 710.

I guess some knives you just fall for and others you don't. Unfortunately the 705 fits into the latter category for me... Maybe I expected too much?

Joe, interesting. I wouldn't have thought there'd be that much difference in the size of the two models. (but there I go thinking again!) I have never liked the thin blade models from BM. I'm however planing on a 707 and looking for the "mini 520" to show. From the sound of your reveiw, maybe a 707 would better suit you.

Good luck, Walter

Joe, I agree with everything you've said about the 705. Like you, I really dislike the narrow blade shape. A "toothpick" is a good description. The 707 does look very nice with the wider blade.

One reason I never liked the 705, though I owned two, is the thickness of the handle...to me it's too thick. I prefer the Mini grip, but wish it had g-10 scales, and 154 CM.

Don't you mean Goldilocks? :D :D :D

Anyway, I agree with your review. Before I bought my 710, I was considering the 705 because the 710 seemed quite long for utility and sheeple factor. I thought the 705 looked just right in pictures, but when I had a feel for the real thing in a knife store, your words meshed with my thoughts that moment. I immediately glanced at the 710, felt it for a few moments, paid for it and walked out much satisfied.

It´s not, that i would disagree, but what kind of "review" is it to give a very personal impression here?

Your post has nothing to do with the knife but more with the risk to buy a knife without looking at it before. :(

As a very personal thing this would be better placed in the general blade discussion forum.

Blop - I think you have a fair point there.

I was originally in 2 minds with this one - general discussion or review... I opted for review (of sorts) as I felt that my impressions of the knife are as valid as a breakdown of its cutting abilities, the smoothness of opening or the fit and finish, etc.

Symantically speaking I'm not sure that there is much difference between a review and an impression. However, I take your point. Thanks.

Coming back to the blade shape, or blades in general - given the fact that mr ritter used a bm handle for his blade. I wonder if bm would consider "swapping blades" in their various handles. Hell, mr ritter might even like to try a new blade shape for the 705 or the 707 for that matter. :D

The 705 blade shape reminds me of another bm model... the 943.

Oh yeah, Goldilocks!!! ... what was I thinking :D :D

I gotta agree... I resisted getting a 705 for ages, although I loooove my 710. I finally picked up a 705-401 (the last limited edition they did, with silver G10 scales), just for the collection; and you're right, the blade seems pretty small.

I also gotta agree with the rest of the horde here, the 707 fixes that problem nicely. :) I've even seen pictures of a 705 and 707 with the blades swapped; the 707 blade works and looks great in the 705 handle.

For a blade the same size as the 705, the 77x series is nice. Similar size blade, but much slimmer handle, and a scaled-down Axis lock, too. Or, if that's a tad too small still, but you want a 710-ish blade, the 941/943 rocks!

This is whay I was so happy when the 707 came out. I like the wider blade, and the aluminum handle with G10 inserts really work for me. This is the best smaller factory edc I've found.

Same kind of let down on this end but for a different reason. I also love the 710 and have two. My EDC is a mini-Grip, but wanted G10 and better steel.

Personally just don't like the grip of the 705 incomparison to the mini-grip. It's a no contest situation for me. It's too damn thick for a small blade. The blade itself doesn't bother me in that it is meant to be a small knife.

A little bit of thread drift but I am really liking the BM mini skirmish / 635. small enough for EDC, but the blade will please you. Think I need a 707 in my collection too.
