BM705 BM720/721 comparison?

Hi all,

this may sound like a silly question, but how do these compare for size? I have read the specs and based on those (and another 3 inch-or-so blade I own) I ordered the BM705. It arrived yesterday and I do like it. It fits my requirements for a sturdy non-threatening/inconspicuous knife really well. However, it "felt" much smaller then I expected. I actually considered returning it for a few minutes before I decided that I actually liked it. I am considering getting the 720 or 721 and I was wondering what people who have both think of the two knives. Does the extra .5-.6 inch closed (.3 inch larger blade) make it "feel" much bigger? Any comments would be appreciated. By the way, I have nowhere to check out knives locally so I have no choice but to order sight unseen.

Yes it does feel much larger. The handle is also wider as is the blade. This knife is not as large as the 730 or 710. The knife is not so inconspicuous for my carry, but the 705 is.

Thanks Jeff that was very helpful. From what you told me I think I will order the 720 and check it out.

IMHO, the 720/721/722 series carry very well in a wide variety of carry positions. The 720/721 also are "non-threatening" in terms of their looks.

I've also thought the 705 to be a bit small. You should find the 720/721/722 to be of ideal size.

Good luck.

The 720 is something that Goldilocks would pick out--it's not too big; it's not too small; it's just right. I like the 720 with plain edge (IMO the blade profile looks alot nicer than the partially serrated edge version).

Right size, utility/tactical ATS-34 blade, aluminum handle (I prefer over G-10), black hardware (discrete), clip adjustable for tip up/down carry, Axis lock (ss mechanism inset into aluminum handle), etc. What's not to like about this knife?

I usually carry Spyderco knives but I think that the 720 is one of BM's better knives and carry it now and then.

I am a 720/721aholic!

Got 'em both and love 'em both. I'm surprised they are not more popular 'cause as someone else said, they are "just right."

If I was picking between the two, I'd get the 721, It's a tiny bit lighter in the pocket and has a more "grippy" handle. The steel is different as well. The 720 is made of ats34 and the 721 is 154cm. Also, if ambidextrous is important, you can put the clip on either side, but only for tip up carry. You can only put the clip on one side of the 720, but tip up or tip down works.

Wanna see a picture? OK!

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

Hi Hoodoo,

Sending this directly to you as well. Thanks for all your info. What I am seeing is that the 720 has changed. They are now making it in 154CM, it has a different looking hanlde (still aluminum), and it is ambidextrous but does not offer the tip up/tip down option (more like the 721). Personally, since I am right handed, I would rather the choice of tip down/tip up then left right -- oh well. Take a look at the Benchmade site (www.benchmade.com) and tell me what you think. Have you seen this newer model in person yet?

I have both the 720 and the 705 and I like the 720 because it is heavy and it cuts really well. I would recommend the 720 to you because it is a good knife.
