I'm thinking about picking up a 710 but cant decide if I should get the coated blade. D2 is prone to spotting and patina right? would the BK coating keep it from rusting?

How easy does D2 stain? Is it worth getting the coating?

Depends on where you live. I live in a dry climate that doesn't rust my knives much, so D2 holds up just fine. If you live in a more humid area, you can always oil your blade. The coating would help to prevent rust, but it will also wear away unevenly, which some people think looks bad.

My coworker and I each have owned the BM 806D2 for years. He removed the coating from his upon purchase; I left mine. His has never had a single speck of rust on it and he has never so much as oiled the blade once. In fairness, mine is rust-free as well, but I don't care for the coating -- it's just there because I've never bothered to remove it.

On the 710, I'd go satin every time, no doubt about it. My 710 is satin and it looks fantastic. I'd like it even better with blue G10 scales, but we can never have it all.

Have you thought about getting the M390 version? I've heard it's like the closest thing to a stainless M4.

I always regretted buying my 710 with a coated blade.

Go satin

Head over to Knifeworks and check out the 710-2 with m390 blade steel.

Then why would you care if the satin gets some patina from use?

Go satin.

Because scratched coating reflects use where as staining on the blade could reflect use but just as well could reflect neglect.

Mine is satin, and it just looks great. No spots or anything so far.
Generally I don`t like coated blades though, have a couple but it`s really not for me. So I would say go with satin

I EDC'd several 710's for a few years and none of them were coated. I never experienced any issues. I live in a very, very humid climate, too.

Once you go black, you never go back.

My first BM was black and all others since then have been black.

I guess that's not really a reason other than I like it better.

I also prefer partially serrated too, which many don't.

So you don't like it because others might think you don't take proper care of your knives? D2 blades should be routinely oiled like any others. If it's done when it should be, I doubt the blade will ever show any signs of turning color. Further still, regular use will wear away any small beginnings of patina.

I have a satin, and My 710 d2 did pick up a few water spots early on, but I don't worry too much about that... It's a bad azz blade and a GREAT user!
I just put a little chapstick on it every now and then though, just for preventative mantainance, and no spots since.

+1 for the M390 version. Great stainless, I also really love the rounded spine. For $150 I think it's a great buy.
