Hi...

Just received my Benchmade 710M2HS.
As I expected, it's a very fine knife, but one thing bothers me with Benchmade.

IT CAME COMPLETELY DULL !!! :grumpy:

Almost all of my BM came dull from factory. I think I got spoiled by Spyderco. From Spyderco, all the knives I bought came shaving sharp out of the box.

Now I'll spend some time "sharpmaking" my new toy. I know it will not be an easy task, since M2 is a B**** to sharp... ;)

Wish me luck, guys !

That's strange. My 550 from NewGraham came razor sharp, just as sharp as my FRN Delica came. At least you won't be worried about dulling the factory edge :D

If you weren't in Brazil and didn't have a sharpmaker I'd suggest sending it in for a sharpening, although you would have to cover shipping.

Enjoy your 710, and remember to tape your blade belly before sharpening- wouldn't want to get any scratches! May you achieve a shaving sharp edge

Regards,
Dan

That's weird....all of my B.M knives came scary sharp right from the factory........maybe they goofed up on that one.....call up Angie in the warranty & repairs & send it into her. I know it's a pain in the arse, but if it fixes the problem......

I've got 11 Benchmades, and the 710HS came to me far sharper than any other -- inclucing my Griptilian, which I thought was impossibly sharp.

Definitely send it back -- as you've no doubt learned, it's easiest to keep it sharp if it starts out sharp; and there's no need for you to do what the shop should have done.

Sucks that it came dull like that, but what's the point?
BM710M2HS-dull!!!
Hurray for it. That's life.
I've had better luck with BM's factory edges than any company, including Spyderco, and CRK. Big deal.
Should I make a new post every time I get, or check out a knife and it's dull? Or should it only be about certain brands when they're dull?
Or maybe I should post when one is really sharp?
Does anybody care? Just curious.
Please...need input.
This is obviously some huge thing to some people. Maybe we should have a factory edge forum, where people can go back and forth-"mine was sharp", "well mine was dull", "mine cut my eye from looking at it", "mine couldn't cut air", "I don't believe that, they have the best factory edges on Earth", "do not", "does to".
It'll be great:eek:

:p

"Dull happens" as they say. No, really we don't really have anything else extremely important to discuss (Owen :) ) . I just bought two new knives last week: a Benchmade 806D2 and a Spyderco Dodo. The Spyderco had a more polished (and sharper) edge when viewed under 10X magnification while the 806D2 had a rougher working edge that was sharp but not as sharp as Spyderco's. I am not really complaining. Once I get enough
practice using my sharpmaker with diamond rods, which I also bought last week, I should be able to put any edge I want on any of my knifes.

Wow, that's really weird. I have four BM 73x series knives, two 690's an older 975S. They were all shaving sharp when I bought them.

My BM's all came with okay edges, nothing I'd call scary sharp. I never had any problems sharpening M2.

Seriously, whenever you get anew knife, what do you do with it? Say "Oh, well it's a nice knife, let me stick it in this drawer with my other knives and see if they make friends"?

No. You reprofile it, sharpen it, polish it, improve on the factory finish, an generally break it in. Almtiba, you ought to look upon sharpening your new knife as a joy rather than as a chore. Your significant other might think you are crazy (and say so and throw things at you), but that is the price you must be willing to pay.

My BMs come with good edges. About the same as the Spyders I've bought (except for a Gunting with chipped edge, but I blame that 440V) Cold Steel has been a mixed bag for me, my med. Voyager was frightening, El Hombre doesn't cut paper cleanly (and it has a substantial recurve, how fun :() Kershaws have been pretty consistent with scary sharp edges, from personal experience.

Hi Owen, nice to meet you !
If this is a idiotic thread for you, just don't bother to reply... Spend your time doing something else. You'll be a happier guy... ;)

Back to the thread,

The bad factory sharpening blade from BM is something I have been noticing for some time now. The only two BMs that came really sharp were my 690s...

But you're right, Will, one thing that gives me pleasure is the time I spend sharpening my knives. And no matter how sharp they are out of the box, it's nicer to have a polished edge, proudly self made :)

It's almost midnight now, and I noticed I spent almost two hours playing with my new 710: listening to a Marc Cohn Cd, I reprofiled the blade on a DMT 220 grit, passed it thru the 320 and 600 and jumped to the sharpmaker...

After that, I made a "hang" knot with a black parachute lanyard and the new toy is ready to go....

Know what ? Nothing better to relieve the tension of a hard working day...

Still wondering how those dead bugs get into closed light fixtures.
They're born there when the bulb is being made, then they die from the heat.:D.

I like Benchmade knives and I've never recieved a dull one (I own 4 models).
My Benchmades have been delivered just as sharp as my Spydercos (sharper in fact than my Spyderco Vesuvius).

For the price of a Benchmade I expect a sharp factory edge--so I would send it back to Benchmade.
It makes me wonder if there is something wrong with the blade since they could'nt sharpen it at the factory.

Allen.
