I have the opportunity to purchase one or the other of these knives, both new, but with the Alias being over $100 cheaper. Interested to hear from those of you who are familiar with both - comments on fit and finish differences between the two and overall build comparisons.

Knife will be edc with occasional use hunting, but no really rough stuff. I also plan to do more food prep with my next edc - I guess the 761 probably wins out in this respect. Anyhow, looking forward to your thoughts. Cheers

My opine; go for the Alias. Owned a couple of them and were fine knives. Fit and finish, always top notch, beat the pants off anything at the time. And just try to find one, not tucked away in many collections. Hope the one you're considering is the PE satin model, that was my favorite version.

My choice would be the 761. I regard it as one of the finest knives I own.

They are very similar as far as specks butt the 761 gives you a slightly longer M390 steel blade. The question then becomes are you willing to pay more for the added performance.

Ecstatically I also prefer the 761 but that's a personal preference and regard them both as great knives and don't think you can go wrong with whatever you choose.

Good luck and all the best!

my experience with the 761 at my local knife store was utter chaos the 761 I handled for a good while was the most dangerous folder Ive ever seen. BM has some SERIOUS kinks to work out of the knife although I am sure not all the first production run was bad like that of course there were some good ones but WOW talk about hit or miss! Alias all the way at least you know what you are getting into

Benchmade has got your back either way, so pick the design you prefer.

The 761 is a badass.

Here's mine, been in pocket again the last couple of days:

I would go with the Alias now and if you feel so inclined get the 761 later. The Alias is out of production so they are getting hard to find. The 761 is a newly released production knife so you got a while to get one of them.

I haven't handled the 761- the Alias is relatively thin and light, the 761 at least looks a bit fatter.

If you get a 761 try to get one that is NOT first production. Hopefully some of the bugs have been ironed out in post first run knives

Thanks CelticCross - I have read about your experience here and elsewhere. Quite unfortunate. Yes, I think I will wait a while to avoid a first production.

On a different note, the retailer who is selling the Alias will not ship it to me, so unless I can find someone in the US to complete the transaction - its a no-go.

This is the problem with living on a small rock 18 squillion miles from anywhere.

An update:

I have just heard back from the retailer with the Alias to explain there was a mistake in their stock system and they do not have one in stock after all..

The rep says backordered for one to two weeks

Here I was thinking I had found the last Alias on shop shelves in the world. Ha.

So it looks like it will be a 761 afterall. What a pity :-)

A good 761 is a worthy alternative. Seek out the second un-numbered versions and I think you'll be pleased.

FWIW I own both a numbered first production and post first production and both are flawless, exceptional knives.
