still can't freakin decide. there's no place local i can handle these, so... :(

they haven't made the 806 in an HS version ("high speed") yet. they currently offer the 806D2, which is a different steel than that found in the 710HS (which uses M2 steel).

if you're looking for a general EDC, the 710(HS) cannot be beat. for a more tactically-inclined knife, go for the 806D2. i also think that the handle on the 806 is quite nice, but also longer than the 710's, which gives the 710 a bit of an edge in the blade-to-handle ratio department.

if it were up to me, i'd choose the 710. i love the recurved blade and the overall shape and design. it's a fantastic all around knife.

I second what he said. Got my hopes up for an 806 in M2. But I'd rather carry/use an 806 bc of the straighter blade/pointier tip/handle setup. Buy both, either one would be a superb knife it all comes down to personal preference.

sorry i meant 806D2

that being said, aside from blade shape, do you guys tend to prefer D2 or M2 for EDC use, and what's the difference

Both are very good man. I've never personally handled a 710, but I could see the 710's blade shape being a tad more versatile.

The 806 D2 is an excellent folder, I own one. The handle is dreamy, the blade is awesome, and it flips open like magic.

The only major difference is feel. Odering both and returning one might even work ;x

From a fellow twer.. 806 :]

710HS would be my pick - M2 is such a good steel and the slight recurve in blade shape makes a great slicer.
The 806D2 has the better handle but I'm not so keen on the blade shape and oval hole. I just have a Spyderco = Hole, Benchmade = Thumbstud type mentality -BM630 is the exception to this rule.

806D2 is my pick, the D2 and M2 arent that much different, i wouldnt sweat that. i have a 800M2 and the 806D2, imho they both wear/sharpen about the same.

I've had both. I sold the 806D2, still have the 710. I think the 710 is the better cutter of the two and is more versatile for EDC. Plus, the 806 handle didn't work for me; I found it to be too narrow for my hands.

Ditto.

The 806 is an excellent knife, but it was designed for combat. The 710 - I believe - is one of the foundation stones of a good EDC collection. (I have the 710 HSSR).

I have both. The 710 (plain satin blade) logs more time in my pocket than any other knife I own. The 806BTD2 was carried for a few days, and sits in the collection.

Why? Glad you asked... :)

The blade shapes are very similar, but the 710's recurve makes it a better slicer.

Also, despite the similar blade sizes, the handle on the 806 is at least a half inch longer, making it a bit less comfy to EDC. I don't have big ol' mitts like some guys, so the larger handle to me is just, well, larger. The 710 fits my hands like it was made custom for me.

Despite it's size, the 710's shiny blade doesn't freak out sheeple as much as the "evil" black blade on the 806.

Oh, and I've never gotten used to seeing that hole in the blade; on a Spyderco, with a big hump on top, a hole works for me, but the 806 just looks like it's going to break there. Must be the engineer in me, looking for potential fracture points...

I'm thinking seriously of selling off both the 806 and 710, picking up a 710HS, and stripping off that ugly black coating for my ultimate EDC. As much as I love my 710, the idea of one with tool steel gets me all tingly! :D

I've handled both the 806D2 and 710 on numerous occassions.

My first purchase this year, on January 1, was between the 806D2, the Spyderco Military and the 710HS. I chose the 710HS, and have not regreted it since. I liked it so much I got the 154CM version as an alternate. Other than Opinels, that's the first time I've bought 2 of the same model knife.

So far, the M2 has lived up to the hype. My subjective impression is that it outperforms the several S30V blades I have both in edge holding and the ability to take a finer edge.

I think you will find lots of folks spending considerable time deciding between the 806, 710, Military, and Al Mar SERE 2000. There are no bad choices between them, just slight individual preferences.

For me, I have owned and used all of these with the exception of the 710. Not that I haven't come really close to buying one, though. It is just that when holding the 710 in comparison with others the 710 does not feel as "right", if that makes sense.

Of these four, right now I only have the Military and am very happy with it. But sometimes I really miss my 806. It was versatile enough to easily do all of the cutting chores I use a knife for, the handle shape was excellent, and the 4 position clip was nice. Also, from what I have heard the omega springs in the 806 are much larger and stronger than those in the 710.

As always, the best advice is to handle them at the same time for a little while. Either way you go, if you change your mind it should not be very difficult to quickly trade or sell the one for another.

I love my 710 also. It is a great combination of handle and blade length. It is the only non-Strider or Sebenza that I rotate through as an EDC these days.
