Check it Out

Anyone have this knife?

The only problem is that I've read on several forums that the AXIS lock has a tendancy to rust out. Let me know if you have any experiance with this or any other AXIS. I love the duel blades!:eek:

The AXIS lock rusting!? I've never heard about that anywhere!

I know quite a few people have the BM 921 (Switchback) and I've only heard good things about it. I want to pick one up myself!

HAHAHA. Look, it's the internet rumour effect at work!

One recently reported case of axis lock being rusted up leads to a rumour of "the AXIS lock [having] a tendancy to rust out".

You think he means the thread about the AXIS spring breaking? That was due to rust?

Yeh, that's probably where it came from. The breakage could have occured due to corrosion, though baraqyal doesn't tell us how the omega spring looks.

I clean mine out occasionally, no rust so far.

Rusting??? The Axis lock system is widely considered to be one of the best around. Don't even give it a second thought.;)

I just got a 921 this past week and its a great knife. If you like it, go for it. :) They can be had BNIB for $118 plus shipping.

I have had a 921 for a few months now and it is a great knife.

The main blade is exceptionally sharp and stays that way for a long while. I own a 2 axis locks and a SOG Arc lock, neither show signs of rust and I live by the beach. My 921 has the smoothest action out of all of them.

It is a very charismatic knife. People who normaly cringe at the sight of personal cutlery are more curious about it than afraid. And I find the smaller blade is more useful than I expected it to be.

The handle is stylish, lightweight and comfortable although I am not crazy about almite aluminium. It would be cool if a special edition came out with bright blue G-10 scales or maybe a micarta (something with a little more grip/durability). But thats just another one of them "wish factories would design knives just for me" things.

I got mine for a great deal from New Graham Knives (they are a dealer here, so I hope this is prudent to say):

Good service and prices. One of the things I liked is that I was given a tracking number...makes it more fun because you can feed your anticipation by watching the checkpoints your knife goes through on its way to you.

Nuke,

What do you have exactly in your mind, could you elaborate, please?
The Axis Lock basically is made up of 6 matching parts:
  • blade tang;
  • locking bar, what locks the blade opened being positioned across the path of blade tang;
  • two so-called omega springs what force the locking bar into forward position causing locking;
  • two elongated slots in steel liners the locking bar moves along.

Here you can see all this stuff. What exactly should tend to rust?
I have at least 7 Axis Lock equipped knives, I carry some of them (mostly 551 Griptilian) on daily basis and so far I didn’t notice any rust on anyone. On the other hand all steels tend to rust – plain carbon steels faster, stainless ones – slower. This is the only matter of conditions, just immerse your stainless steel construction in salt water, don’t clean after immersing and I would be surprised if you wouldn’t see any rust after few days. The sweat, blood and some natural liquids more work quite similarly...

So the solution looks quite simple for me: keep your knife clean, wash it in fresh water after immersing in aggressive liquids, dry them or blast with compressed air next, finally blast with some solvent-lubricant like WD-40 or something similar. Apply sometimes a drop of hi-tech lubricant into both Axis Lock slots, BENCHMADE recommends Militec one to maintain their knives and it works very well for me. However I suppose that each similar stuff wouldn’t let you down.
BTW, don’t apply too much lubricant, it could cause dust deposit on locking mechanism. Especially this touches Axis Lock knives what are carried with locking device positioned deeply in pocket, near its bottom where dust and debris gathers easily.

I have seen locks rust but only when they have been abused by not taking care of them and such. Buy one clean it up every so often put oil on it and no problem. I bet you wash and wax your car so it don't rust don't ya? Same deal it's metal you have to take care of it some.

Thanks guys. I guess I just get carried away with rumors. I'm on a tight budget and am skeptical 'bout anything that might go wrong. I'm going to spring for it.
Thanks Again.:p
