I bought a 520 in 154cm and my girlfriend liked the AXIS lock so much that she wants a Griptilian. I went online and apparently, I can get a griptilian in D2 and S30V, now I am jealous because I am going to buy her a knife with better (fad?) steel. My question to those of you who have Benchmades in 154cm and D2/S30V, is; What do you think? Am I going to have to sharpen my 520 while I watch my girlfriend shaving her legs with a still shaving shapr edge a month form now, or has Benchmade pretty much got the 154cm heat treat down pat, to the point where I won't really notice it.
Thanks in advance, and I am sorry about the long post.

I wouldn't think there'd be too noticeable a difference. There is SOME difference, but at this point in time, and dealing with a company like Benchmade, you'd probably have a hard time noticing.

Off Topic, but, hey, you brought it up: I wouldn't be doing anything to distract myself, if watching my girlfriend (actually, my wife) shave her legs. Maybe it's just me, but I find that extremely sexy to watch, especially in the bathtub! (Hope this doesn't get this put in Community.)

The way that Benchmade grinds and heat-treats the 154CM that they use is excellent, so I feel that it is a steel that isn't very far behind the D2/S30V steels in actual use or performance.

I have a Benchmite (310) in 154cm and I continue to be amazed at how sharp it is, how it holds an edge, and how easy it is to sharpen. I don't use it for anything really heavy, due to its size, but I'd put the steel up there with ATS-34 or VG-10. It's good stuff.

Uh, Thanks Daniel... ....What a great insight... :D

:D :D :D I read your post to my girlfriend and we both were laughing hysterically

Unless you are really hung up on steel types I do not think you will notice any difference. MY 520 in 154 is a great knife and my Grip in S30 is just as good. Good thing about the Grip is the lighter weight. Both blades are about the same grind and cut equally well.

True - especially if you leave Benchmade's factory edge angle.

The two schools of thought in moving to better steel are:
1. A better steel allows it to hold it's edge longer at the same sharpening angle.
2. You can lower your edge angle a bit for better cutting performance with the same edge retention.

I usually choose 2.

In order to TRULY start seeing a difference between steels that aren't bad to begin with, you have to lower the sharpening angle to a much more shallow angle. THEN, you might start seeing a difference in edge retention, edge-roll and (if you use a strop) how much stropping it takes to return it to scary-sharp again. I've done this extensively with both Benchmade 154cm and ESPECIALLY an 806 in D2 and I'm convinced D2 behaves better than most when treated this way. This is how I fell in love with D2 and now I get my customs in D2.

Of course NONE of this matters if you touch-up your knives very frequently.
