I just had a lot of fun handling my friend's new 550 (I have to pick one up myself). Well, this was my first time using the new oval hold from BM, and I thought I'd offer my two cents since this has been debated already.
The new oval hole looks alright and it works great with your thumb. The problem, however, is that it does not work in reverse grip. A spyderco circular hole can be opened with your ring finger in a reverse grip. This can be useful to you depending on your draw, etc, or you might not care. The BM hole cannot be opened with your ring finger in reverse grip: your finger gets horribly twisted. I tried it a couple times and OUCH!!! My finger would get stuck in the football shape and get twisted as far as the blade traveled. I tried it many times to see if I could find a way to do it, but always had the same results. I ended up with a sore finger and broken spirits.
So if you expect this hole to perform in every way that the spydie hole does, you might be dissapointed. I don't know how many of you open your knife in reverse grip but I sometimes do and I thought I'd spread the word.
