BNIB Endeavor and Very Tight Action Question

My first experience with a NEW Emerson 2012 Model (Endeavor), received today and action was tight, I thought just needs break in cycling.

50 cycles later and it seems to be getting harder to open, so I loosen the pivot and oiled, continued with 50 more cycles and it's still take good amt. of thumb to cycle it.

It's smooth but tight.

Thinking about servicing myself i.e. take apart, clean, lube. BUT wanted to check in first.

Any body had a similar experience?

Appreciate it!

I've never had an Endeavor, but I've hade a couple of CQC15s and micro-Coms. They've all been tight at first. It takes a while for them to reak in. I do blow my new ones out several times and add some of whatever lube I'm using at the moment... sometimes Militec, sometimes sewing machine oil, sometimes something else. Then I just use them and wait for them to break in. After the break-in period none of mine have ever needed any tinkerin' to work well. Personally, I'd just leave it alone and use it for a month or two, then re-evaluate it.

Thanks for your time, I agreed. I just never had one out of box that was this tight. I'm guessing their pivot tolerances require more break in time. :D

Brand new Emerson's seem to have a lot of gunk in them, I'd recommend taking it apart (its super easy, easier than most other knives I've had) and clean it out. Then relube it and, if you like, loctite the pivot where desired. It will be so smooth once all that crap is out of there.

Man, wow! Like a gun barrel the crap that came from the pivot.

Smoother thru 75% of action but still tight at the end if opening. Should break in just fine.
Gonna take down some boxes now

The last three Emersons I have gotten have all been pretty tight. This is what I do:

I tend to keep the pivot snug.To the point it locks up good with no wiggle of the blade and the blade is centered (there is kind of a happy medium to juggle). Then I spray it down around the pivot area with CLP and work it open to close many times. After each repetition, I wipe the excess CLP from the areas it has oozed out of. A lot of black crud comes with it. This method helps get the crud out, work the action, and wear in any sticky lock issues. It is time consuming, but you dont have to take it apart. Also, it helps develop muscle memory for that particular model. As mentioned, it is easier to take apart, but I am too chicken to do that and I like to play with knife anyway.

** Make sure you get any of the CLP (or oil, or whatever you used) off the lock face of the blade before you carry it or use it !

I noted the washers were steel (I think) wonder if i swapped for PB ones, would the action improve?

As you already know, they're nylatron. I've seen reports both ways from people who've switched to PB washers. They run about 50-50 for improvement vs. off center/stiff action/lockup probs. I've talked to a few long-time Emerson and Al Mar users and 100% of them have told me that they've never experienced a problem with the washers that Emerson or Al Mar uses, even after years of daily carry & use. I haven't used mine as long as they have, but I've had Al Mars, Emersons, and Buck/Mayo folders that all have used nylatron washers and I've had no issues either.
