Just got a sweet deal on a boa. What do you guys think of yours? I couldn't pass it up but confess that I know little about it. I watched a guy at Freeport Knife Shop sharpen a neglected one and he said it was a bear to bring back. I will try to stay on top of it but am not great at the recurve sharpening technique. I would love to hear your thoughts on this knife! Thanks, Russ:D

I guess you know that the 440V is almost 99.9999% identical to S60V, right? I really love my Boas. :D I've got 4: A S30V (MAR 07) PE tip up/down right, up left (blade spine to the rear of the pocket), a S60V (MAY 05) CE, again up/down right, up left, a 440V MC satin blade (OCT 02) PE tip up/down right only, and a S60V (12 00) PE tip down left only. Three distinct differences in this last one, other than the single tip placement. The blade is etched in a light reddish gold color, the BOD is not alpha-numeric, and there is no Made in the USA etched on the blade, or anywhere on the knife for that matter. Kinda cool!

One thing I didn't like about the Boa was the 'hard edges" on the knife. The thumb ramp, flipper and the blade spine are sharp, too! It's more noticeable in the later two. I decided to use the S30V, so I hit it with a foam backed 10,000 grit paper. I completely de-burred the entire knife. It feels like a 1911 that has been to a custom smith. Soft, rounded edges all around. Except for the bevel! It's very comfortable and a real hoot to carry!

Yup. Gotsta love the Boas! :D

Very nice score! I love mine, was fortunate enough to get one from another member here on the forums;) I wouldn't know about sharpening though, as this one has never been out of it's box:D

Thanks for the feedback guys! I was aware of the steel kinship to s60v, pretty wear resistant... Can't wait to check it out, probably have to hide it from my son, he loves Kershaws:D. Russ

With the recurve you probably would want a Spyderco Sharpmaker, and I would go ahead and invest in the diamond rods they offer.

Used a single Boa for 4 or 5 years straight -everyday! With diamond stones didn't find it particularly hard to sharpen - but to be honest -never have tried to shave with any knife? Simply great tool - had STR add a ball detent to one of mine - so i could use it without a torsion bar to hold it closed.Classic ken Onion.
Hope you get a chance to use it or look for a user (they're around) - too good of a tool to leave in the box.

Congratulations!:thumbup:You just got one of my most sought after knives.

You mean you've never even looked at it? The great guy that hooked you up could have sent you a box of rocks! :D

One of my first Kershaw knives was an older Black Boa with a CPM440V blade. Not exactly sure when I got it, probably at least 7 or 8 years ago, maybe a little longer. It is a great knife that' I'll pass along to my son in a decade or two.

 Man, you have a very good point there. I'm gonna go check right now. If that guy screwed me over, I'm goin' after his behind!!!

you've got to poke some holes in the box,so that Boa can breathe!! :D thanks for info on the diamond rods! :)

Fellas, honest opinion, but in no effort to demean the original poster:

Is seeking out the S60V version worth the difference in price and performance of the S30V?

Im no major Boa fan, so if I buy one, Im gonna use it to prove it has some merit.

Whats the verdict?

J, I can't tell any difference between the two steels simply because I haven't used any S60V. Yet. I just got my first blem in the mail. But its going away for some special treatment. Now I can tell you that the S30V Kershaw did on the Boa is fantastic (and the Blur, too). Of course I've tinkered with the edge a bit, but despite what I've done, the S30V takes a very nice edge and will keep it a long time. For what I do with it, it seems to work better with a toothy edge.

Uh, yeah...Yeah! That's right! I took my flawless S60V Blur (NOT a blem!) and, well, first I took an old car hood, and I started stabbing it, to see if it would pierce metal. Then I clamped it in a vise, and beat the snot outta it with a 4 foot lead pipe to see how much it would take. Then I chopped thru some cinderblocks, just for fun.

After that all I was able shave hair whittling sharp!

:D
