Hi All. I liked Bob Lums collaboration with Spyderco so much that I have 2 - a user and a nice shiny one! I am interested in the views and opinions of custom Lum fixed blades by any owners out there. Photos also appreciated. Particularly interested in his tantos - the field grade and high grade. Anyone got his flat ground tanto? Thanks everyone!

Tony, that is a phenomenal collection that you have. I really enjoyed the pictures as I've not seen many Lum's prior.

Hi Lumnut - knew I could depend on you! I have admired Bob's work for years and a couple of years ago got one of the Spyderco collaborations (fixed blade). It is a nicely made knife and I like it so much that I just bought a second one 'for keeps' (and a River City concealex sheath). I just got a Wally Hayes tanto made so I am pretty sure that I like tanto styles. I think I would like to find one of Bob's field grade tantos - I am interested in what the flat ground blade is like. I view your collection from time to time. How long did it take to gather all those? I swapped e mails with Bob recently and he told me it is 16 months back log right now. Do you use his knives at all?

They are just as fine as his hollow ground ones. The drawback to a Flat ground Tanto is that it's extremely difficult to pull off the wonderful hamagiri tip. Of the 4 Flat ground tantos I own, they are all traditional shaped, without the chiseled hamagiri tip.

Almost twenty years and counting.

I have about a dozen that I use regularly in rotation. Of my collection, I've used about 40% of them. Bob prefers that his knives be used, and I'm more than happy to oblige him. ;)

Thanks Tony - I've got a lot of catching-up to do! I took the Spydie Lum into the yard today and it cuts pretty well in whittling and carving. I was surprised.
