A Spyderco dealer is having a boxing week sale and I'm tempted to pick one of these up.

A while ago after seeing the original C15 I immeaditally thought "It would be awesome if they re-released this knife but with a tanto blade"...Well here's exactly this knife staring me in the face!! I find this knife very visually appealing. It's on sale for only $139 CAD. ($101 US)

But they also have this one on sale...

I don't find it quite as visual appealing but my gut is telling me I might be missing something here as the MSRP is much higher then the other. But it's also on sale for $149Cad or (109 USD)

Which of these two knives do you guys prefer? I would like to hear your opinions and experiences with both. I'm leaning towards the double bevel just because I don't have a tanto and I've been really wanting one. But I also don't want to miss out on something that might be totally amazing like the Starmate.

Is there any particular reason? Do you like the looks and ergonomics more?
To be honest I've never had or held a double bevel, I just don't like the looks. It will probably perform better as a knife than the Starmate though, with both the thin flat grind portion and the hollow ground portion. The Starmate sprint version I had was saber ground and very thick behind the edge. The Starmate to me is just really beautiful, great ergos and the thick blade makes for a very nice and decisive opening action. More intended as a stabber than a slicer though I think. I'm afraid I can't offer much practical comparative insight though.

I agree the double bevel on one hand makes the knife look unique but on the other hand I think it's an acquired taste, and it puts a lot of people off from this knife. The reviews I watched of the starmate everyone raves how ergonomic it is. I just find the starmate a little bland looking.

Star mate. It's a classic design. Also more visually appealing for me.

In a way the Double Bevel almost looks like a bad photoshop lol. I have a feeling the DB is the type of knife you either like or hate. The best solution for me would to be buy both and keep the one I liked the most, but I have a feeling the DB might be a hard re-sale.

I totally agree. The double bevel reminds me of the cqc-7 which I absolutely despise. Decision made easy.

Starmate for me as well. Mostly because it looks like it’d be insanely comfortable in hand, and has the overall aesthetics that I’ve come to love from Spyderco. Hell, even I want one now, haha.

I owned botb of these at the same time, but never actually used either of them. I both somebodies Spyderco collection and sold what i didnt want.

The double bevel is very pocket friendly. It opens smoothly and would make for about a perfect edc knife. I just couldn't ever get past the duel grinds, and didn't want to spend the money on a regrind.

The starmate is a whole different knife. Its really thick, robust, and the opening/closing is a harder on it. The size dwarfs the db.
If the grind didn't bother me aesthetically so much i would pick the double. But the starmate is a beaut and really cool in that big knife way.

Based purely on observation, as I haven’t owned either, I would go Starmate. Don’t like the look of the other and don’t find those types of grinds useful.

They are both notorious for weak detents. I had the Starmate. It's good looking. That's the best I can say about it. Weak detent, very thick grind, sticky lock with questionable geometry.

Just an update I ordered both...For the prices I couldn't walk away, as in my local knife store they want $120 for a regular Endura. I might have to eat Ramen this month but that's OK :P

I ended up not being able to chose between the two.

The Starmate is the better knife. I like that the blade is thick and beefy, and if it was the apocalypse it would probably be the go to knife to have in my collection. Every review I watched said once you hold it you will realize just how amazing it is. And the original MSRP was $45 US more then the double bevel yet I'm can buy it for only $7 more, which logically made it the better choice.

But there's just something I love about the Double Bevel. My brain said no but my heart kept saying YES! From the reviews I read it sounds like 9/10 people dislike this knife which is OK, I get that it's weird, and weird in a way that doesn't make sense. But something about it strikes my imagination for some reason. I'm 100X more excited about it then the Starmate though that may change once I actually use them.

Thanks everyone for the good advice I really appreciate it.

Always the right choice!

IMO the Double Bevel falls into the unique/quirky category that Spyderco does so well. If something like that speaks to you, hold on to it! Make it a prized part of your collection, regardless of “value” or concensus opinion.

Went home for lunch and found my package waiting for me.

I will have to take some better pics later.

Its kinda weird but the double bevel came your typical Spyderco sharp, but the Starmate came butter knife dull.

I also knew the DB was a lot smaller. But its actually smaller then I was expecting. I think the review I read the guy must have had baby hands lol
