Hi Guys,

I've searched the net for bog oak, no luck. can anyone point me to a source?

Thanks,

dave

David,
It is hard to come by, and sadly, some of what is offered isn't really bog oak.....so, as with everything rare, caveat emptor.

There is a seller in Ireland that carries nice stuff, but I can't recall his name.

There are a couple of UK sellers on ebay.
It makes superb carved sgian dubh handles. A good alternative is African Blackwood.

What project do you have in mind?

There were two guys on E-bay that had some a while back. The one guy was from England and usually has some for sale. The other guy was from down south.Search under knife scales.Very interesting looking wood.

Thanks, Guy

I now have a couple of leads, thanks to the kind folks here. Stacy, I'm now at the point in my knifemaking career (for what it's worth, LOL) where I can draw a complicated, detailed design and actually make it. So, I spend hours, and hours, and even more on drawings, then make the knife. The blade is finished. The guard too, and I debated on what material the handle should be, I thought of everything from black paper mycarta to ivory, and, ahh, heck, to answer your question, it's a Sheffield Bowie.

Hi David -- David is the fella's name from England on eBay that I've bought decent quality knife sized blocks from. I bought some from another person once that were cheaper, but they were junk. They cracked and check practically while I watched them sitting on my desk. David takes care in drying the wood well and seals ends with wax. Just do a search on eBay and he will pop up. Once I wanted some bigger sizes than he had listed. I just emailed and asked and he cut them for me. I look forward to seeing what you do. -- Aloha, Phil

Here is a source in Scotland that I plan to use shortly. Below is an email I got from the company last week.

Hi David,

Many thanks for your email.
We are able to send to the US and have 2 delivery options available - Standard AirMail @ £7.95 or International AirSure @ £11.50 which is slightly quicker and allows us to track the delivery online.
We do not have any availability of Scottish origin Bog Oak at the moment unfortunately, however we have a good supply of the Fenland Bog Oak which is available via our web-shop at the following link:
http://www.lochnessorigins.com/acatalog/Sgian_Dubh_Components.html

We would be able to get a natural Smoky Cairngorm Quartz pommel made up in a plain brass or sterling silver ferrule. The link below shows some examples of pommel stones, although we no longer have the patterned ferrules available for mounting pommels.
http://www.rainnea.com/sgian-dubh-pommels.htm
Price would be £60 - £80 depending on the size/type of ferrule you wanted and would take approx 6 weeks.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Tanya Gordon

If it doesn't work out for you I have some here.
I'm not greedy, we'll work it out :)

I made a knife (kith 2009) out of bog oak and 'normal' oak together.
I realy liked how they combine, because the structure is the same but the colour different.
