Bog oak

Someone posted a bog oak knife over at Don Foggs place recently, perhaps they could assist.:)

I got some from Kim Taylor at SDK supplies a few years back. I don't think he has it all the time. He didn't have it last time I checked (maybe last year?)

Bog oak is cool when you know what it is, but it ain't the best handle material. It's basically just oak, which means splinters and large grain.

Were you thinking of stabilizing it? That would probably help.

I am not a knifemaker, but have seen bog oak sculptures and really like the way it looks. I was thinking of having it used on a bowie that I am ordering.

From what I have read, bog oak is not necessarily even oak. It is a name given to any tree that has been buried in a bog for hundreds to thousands of years.

What I want to do is research the viability of using this wood for knife handles and really appreciate your help. Thanks.

I purchased some raw pieces of Bog Oak, off of a seller on eBay. But as a rule you might throw away 40% or more of the wood. It seems to have a lot of cracks unseen until you start cutting in to it. It does stablize, I had K&G do some for me. You might consider purchasing a completed piece of Bog Oak art and turn it into your knife handle. It should be very dry and ask the seller if it has any signs of cracking.
