Not exactly sure if I was to post this here or in the gear sub-forum. In terms of using linseed oil to protect your hickory axe handle - is it best to use boiled or raw/pure linseed oil?

Thank you.

I like raw. "Boiled" just means that it has stuff added to it to make it gum faster. I mean "dry" faster.

And i thought this was a thread about some estoteric survival root that you could eat raw or boiled........

I cut the boiled linseed oil with white spirit
it dries even faster
And i do repeated coatings

Actually the best forum is the axe sub-forum. :D http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/768-Axe-Tomahawk-amp-Hatchet-Forum

I use boiled. I tried cutting it with spirits but did'nt notice enough of a difference for the extra hassle of mixing. I just use it straight from the can now.

I've found that tung oil lasts a lot longer than linseed oil, and stands up to moisture better. You don't have to reapply it as often.

I've been thinking about this and may end up doing it. My buddy did some research on how to appropriately finish his Garand stock and found that soldiers ended up using tung oil. Probably for the same reason.
