I think I know what the answer will be, but my brother wanted me to find out...

Any of you all had any problem boiling water in your Guyot/Nalgene or Klean Kanteen bottles?

Marion

No problem at all.

All weekend I was boiling in my KK over both my camp stove and the fire. Basically as long as a bottle is uncoated (on the inside) it will work fine.

I haven't boiled in mine (use Billycan), but I would guess if it got real hot, the inside as well as outside would get dark , and maybe eventually rust. FWIW, I've drank water boiled in my old billy that I used for coffee, and it's a little rusty. No probs.

Stainless steel won't rust. Just don't let it boil dry and it'll be fine. The outside will get dirty. If you care about such things, coat the outside with liquid soap before using.

As long as there is water in it, it will not get above 212 F Like boiling water in a paper cup.

Should be fine.

Ive done it sooo many times I lost count. Never a problem.

Just remove the plastic lids.

I boil Arizona tea on the stovetop in mine daily before work then transfer it into a traveler for the car.
I have a dirty one for firepits .... sets right in the coals or over a flame....never any issues.

for the guyot/nalgene, no prob!

How do you tell if you have a coating on the inside of the bottle or any other makeshift pot you want to use? Scratch it? Does it change color when heated? Just curious. I don't want to drink some bad stuff if I can help it. Can you burn it out?

Loosearrow, check the manufacturer's website. They will normally be quite proud of the construction of their bottle, and tell you up front. If not, poke around, it is usually under materials or construction.

I haven't had any trouble boiling in my KK. I added a noose made from 20 gauge wire to lift the bottle by. I use a stick through the loop to hold it up, and another stick on the bottom to pour.

Mine after a few uses:

Cool tip about the wire noose, I gotta try that.
I just got a goyot and was wondering how to get it out of the fire. :D

Joben, with the guyot, you have the flange around the opening. I have seen a neat example (was it Flix?) where he drilled a couple of holes into the flange, and attached a wire leader bail-style with a couple of swivel clips used on fishing lines.

Seems like I've heard of folks painting the outside with flat black bbq grill spray paint so you don't have to worry about it blackening.

Thanks, Simon! Yup, that was me. Here is the original thread: Pimp my Guyot!. I'm currently selling that bottle in the Exchange.

Does that blackening scrub off (ie,scotchbrite pad , comet , etc ?)
