Looking at the Boker "economy" Smatchet made with 420 stainless. Does anyone have an idea if this is similar to say Buck's 420HC or perhaps AUS-6? Or are we talking the 420J2 butter knife type of stainless?

420 stainless steel is an O.K. steel, it's probably close aus-6 in quality. I think it would be ok for a large knife that will probably see moderate use. I have a Blackjack that was maded from it sharpens up easily, and handles rust, etc...well.

Hope this helps:D !!!

P.S. You might want to check out the knives made by Dale Sandburg, he makes some nicekives in that style.

Loki, are you referring to this one?:

Boker's site says 420 "Solingen steel," but it's probably the same as what they use on the Top Lock, which is made of 420 steel at a 54-55 Rc (according to Boker's catalogue). Buck acheives a higher Rockwell hardness with 420HC (58 Rc).
