Hey everyone... was just lookin for some opinions on the Boker AFD. It seems there is very little to be found on this one. I think it looks like a pretty cool knife. I am especially fond of the dagger blade, although I know this paticular style has its drawbacks. Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help! ;)

ive had one for about 2 years or so,its well made & it can be opened by pushing on one of its guards.the blade is not very practical for a lot of every day cutting, being a dagger type blade.it carries well in the pocket,& is definitely different than other styles.if you can get one for around 100.00 its worth it,but i cant see going 150+ for one......

C'mon guys... Goldie is the only one who has an opinion on this knife? :grumpy: Must not be worth buying... :thumbdn:

It might also be that no one who owns one has visited the forum yet.
I'd give my opinion, but it is kind of biased...:)
Thanks, Terry

Good point TJT... very true, I just tend to get impatient. :o Biased or not, what do you think? I'd like to hear your honest opinion. You know, a tip-up carry option would make for some nice out-of-pocket opening action! :D But the tip-down on this one looks like it should work equally good by putting the index finger right by the "flipper" when grabbing it out of your pocket.

The AFD is quiet popular in Germany. It is a knife designed for SD, not for EDC. So the genereral usage is limited. But for collecting, opening a box or using for smaller cutting chores, it will do its job.

The handle seems to be "bigger than the blade" which is a design and a functional feature. We wanted, that the customer who is interested in a real double edged dagger, is able to sharpen the upper edge and that the handle covers the sharpened top edge completely.

There is also another modified version availabe, that is dedicated to the Escrima assosiation, which has a larger hand guard and a pointy handle to be used as an impact weapon.
And the steel is 440-C instead of CPM.

I hope this helps a lil bit.

Greeting from Germany!

I have one.

It is very well made: nice piece of engineering, great fit and finish, precision ground steel and anodized aluminium. Everything perfect on such a big knife is quite impressing. That makes it a nice big collection folder.

As a self defense tool, I have no idea since I bought it mostly for collectability.

As an every day tool... Well dagger ergonomics have never been recommanded for every day tasks, so folding daggers aren't either.

Thanks all... that's good enough for me! One should be on its way to my house right now. Comments still welcome though!

Good decision!
what are you going to get? One with a partially serrated edge or a plain edge?
This will be a very reliable tool, made of the best materials available.
If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask!

I decided to get plain edge... Didn't really care for the black coating on the serrated version. Can't wait till tomorrow! :D

hi, i can highly recommend the boker turbine, its a real great knife, nice blade shape, sharp, deep pocket clip, you should check this one out, too.

That's cool. I'd rather spend my cash on knives too. :D THe only reason I have a cam is my sister gave me an old one of hers, so no sweat on that count.

If I could get my hands on a camera could I post pics even though I am only a registered user?

Well, I got home about an hour ago and it was waiting behind the screen door... :D I have to say that all the research I did wasn't enough to prepare me for the handle on this beast. It is huge! Even though I did my homework this still surprised me a bit. It opened very sluggish at first. Applied some mineral oil to the pivot point, this helped quite a bit. It also makes an odd rubbing sound when opening, although this seems to have lessened after playing with it for an hour. I think I am going to have to give this one a little time to break in. This is the largest overall folder I have purchased to date. I think this is why I may not seem all that impressed with it, but I know it will grow on me the more I carry and use it. :) Don't get me wrong; I am not disappointed, just sitting back and taking it in for what it is. I will be sure to keep all of you updated!

It should be nice and smooth once it breaks in a little. My Drop Point Trance was a little stiff and dry feeling when I got it, so I opened it up, wiped everything down, and reassembled. THat helped a lot, and then just flipping it open over the last couple days has smoothed it out even more. I don't like to use lube in folders that are gonna be in my pocket all day, as most seem to just gather more lint and dust than if left dry. Maybe a good dry film type lube would work, but I haven't tried it. Can you flip the blade open using one of the "quillions" on the blade? If so, just play around with it over the next few days by flipping it open, and it should smooth out considerably.
