Boker Ak101 - Vertical Blade Play

Hi,

My Boker AK101 has developed some vertical blade play. When open if you exert some force on the spine there is some play and the liner lock moves slightly towards the open position!

I can see a slight groove that has been intentionally cut out of the tang to stop the liner from slipping all the way across. It may be that the groove has gotten deeper with opening and closing.

The blade play can be easily felt and visibly seen (so I am not confident about using it anymore until resolved).

Being in the UK what do you suggest I do?

Shame really... was my favourite knife. :(

OK, so I spine tested the knife today. I whacked the spine on 1 hard plastic surface, 1 wood surface and 1 laminated wood surface (to get extra shock). The lock did not fail at all.

I just don't like it when I press hard on the spine with my thumb and feel the slight play.

I also have a black AK102 with no play - then again, I haven't been opening and closing as much.

Will it get better or worse over time I wonder?

I can't say whether it will get better or worse, without knowing what is wrong with it, unfortunately.
I would contact Tobias, and see how they want to deal with it.
I'm out of the picture, since you are in Europe.
Thanks, Terry

Thanks Terry,

I've sent him an email.

I'll keep this thread updated.

Cheers,

Any chance you (or anyone else) could post a close up pic of this part of the tang? It sounds like an interesting idea. Thanks.

I'll post a pic but the danger of such a groove is that it wears away causing the liner to move away from its optimal position. Hence the slipping.

After a few opening and closing I can see a lot of metallic dust gathering around the groove indicating wear. I noticed this when I first got the knife but didn't realise it would get bad. I cleaned it off and it comes back after a few opening and closing.

P.S. ALL Boker AK101 have this groove even though the tang itself is on a slant anyway.

Tops, long time, no see:eek:;) Hope you are well! I was thinking about your predicament with the vertical blade play. Does this model have a blade stop pin located inside the frame, or do the thumbstuds act as the blade stop? Guess I could have looked beforehand and I will after I post this. If a fixed stop pin then there may be a flattened area on it that allows the blade to move up and down. The remedy would be to take the knife apart and rotate the pin to another position. Another trick you might try would still need a disassembled knife and then give the locking liner a little bit more bend. This will allow it to put more pressure against the blade tang allowing it to take care of any vertical bladeplay. Hope you get them rectified!:D

Hi friend,

The knife does indeed have a stop pin and I've given it a thorough look over. The stop pin and the part of the blade that comes into contact are not dented/dinged/worn at all. Just to experiment this is what I did - I stuck a piece of paper between the stop pin and blade and opened the blade fully. No more play!

Well done cutter17 you have indeed found a solution that avoid tampering with the groove!

However, I'm a little unsure how to make this permanent.

I'll try rotating the pin because I think my eyes maybe deceiving me.

Most useful suggestion indeed! thanks Cutter17. I'll report back if it works.

P.S. I love this knife so i got a new one!

P.P.S You can see the stop pin in the pics I posted.

Glad it worked!

I loosened up the pivot and was able to rotate the pin. I rotated the stop pin in several turns but it didn't help. So now I put some tape on the pin and it worked.

Tape won't last so I'm not sure how to thicken the stop pin.
