Boker - any link to how to know what is ALL Solingen/Germany vs other countries?

AFAIK, all Boker Tree Brand knives are from Solingen. Just look for the Tree label.

Here's how the Boker lines break down -

Boker Magnum - Knives from all over the place, although usually Asian now. They use it to sell cheaper stuff, and deals they get on certain knives.

Boker Plus - Modern style knives usually from Asia, some Italy.

Boker Arbolito - Boker's Argentina arm, good knives.

Boker Historical - Mostly Asian.

Boker Manufactory Germany - German with world materials, usually Chinese. Due to German rules on import and export, Boker is allowed to claim "Made in Germany" as long as a percentage of the work is done in Germany.

Boker Solingen - These are the fully made German models. They have a huge jump in price, they will actually say Solingen, instead of just "Germany".

This is the Solingen line sold in the US right now - https://www.bokerusa.com/boeker-manufaktur-solingen/?p=1 .

The Solingen line that is sold in Europe sometimes is a tiny bit larger.

I don't think this is still true. I'm pretty sure I've seen some marked with the tree which were not made in Solingen.

If the knife is marked "Solingen", then it is made in Solingen.

I agree with T tltt 's synopsis.

Would be interesting to have an example with some evidence other than hear-say.

Per Boker Solingen: “The famous knives with the world-renowned tree-brand are manufactured in the City of Blades Solingen since 1869.”

I know there are some YouTube videos questioning the origin of Treebrand knife components. But not that a treebrand knife was at least assembled in Solingen.

And I wish I’d also see some evidence that Solingen knives do not include components from other countries. And what are we talking about exactly ? Blades ? Scales ? Where do Boker Solingen Rosewood scales come from ? :)

I know for a fact that the steel in this Boker Solingen knife is not German. Go figure ....

All that can be claimed is that it was assembled ("manufactured") in Germany, just like Boker does for the entire tree brand, see previous post.

And regarding the OP’s question, “Boker - any link to how to know what is ALL Solingen/Germany vs other countries?” the correct answer is “NO”, unless he tolerates some parts coming from other countries (as I do).

Here's a Solingen-made Tree Brand. Notice that the blade is stamped "Solingen". It sells for $134.

Here is another Boker Tree Brand which is NOT stamped Solingen. It has D2 steel and sells for $40.

I have a Boker Tree Brand stockman which was originally sold some dozen years ago as coming from China. It has some sort of stainless blade steel. It was not made in Solingen.

They were more forthcoming with this info years ago, but as soon as that import rule changed, they jumped on the chance to just say they were German. Now you have to needle them in person or over email to get some of this info.

-----------------------------------------

The easiest line to see this with is the TS line, and you can still see old dealer listings selling them as Chinese -

https://www.chicagoknifeworks.com/b...l12eHICPPjSpK-bhx9cbgfB2DAdSe_LaMW-uKgI5Q3JR1 .

https://www.knifecountryusa.com/sto...cIAj9w63M5m8htbueZ57SNpKKMX_aodC4DEqUte_doPBS .

As soon as they were able to change it to Germany because of the change in import/export laws, they did -

https://www.bokerusa.com/ts-2.0-folding-hunter-one-blade-stag-d2-110870 .

https://www.bokerusa.com/traditional-series-2.0-folding-hunter-jigged-brown-bone-110836 .

Also D2 Steel, and Chinese pattern bone jigging.

---------------------------------------------------------

A listing for a Solingen Stag trapper, not available, but was last on sale for $189 -

https://www.bokerusa.com/trapper-114525 .

The Trapper under the TS German line $108 (street price usually around $90) -

https://www.bokerusa.com/traditional-series-2.0-trapper-stag-110833st .

Two fully made German made Bokers should have that much price gap.

---------------------------------------------------------

So the easiest way to figure out if it’s “ALL Solingen/Germany” is the price, I guess :)

If the knife is marked "Solingen" on the knife, normally stamped on the tang, then the knife was made in Solingen. Raw materials such as bone or steel may be sourced elsewhere, but all the forming steps are required to be performed in Solingen. "Treebrand" is no longer a sign that the knife was made in Solingen.

I do not think the price is always a good indicator. The Urban Barlow is Chinese and expensive and the Modern Barlow is Chinese and cheap. They are both in the same line and good quality but one is a premium product.

A Solingen made barlow with named damascus blade is cheaper than the Chinese Urban barlow
