i have a small (~40) collection of recently made production folders, mostly Queen (some S & M), Case, Canal Street, Boker and Eye Brand. there are no knife stores within a day's drive so i shop internet retailers. i have shied away from ordering the least expensive models, assuming them to be of lesser quality than the more expensive ones.
howecer, recently i could not resist a Boker trapper with smooth dark red bone scales and carbon steel for $37 (reg. price, not sale). it has just arrived and i am impressed. the fit and finish is perfect, the springs strong with good snap, blades aligned, no play and sharp. clip is stamped with the tree and "Boker solingen germany".
all of my other tradition folders cost considerably more (2 -3 x) and yet none are finished better and some have flaws (like a Queen mtn. man with a spring as strong as a cooked noodle).
so, my education continues. it seems that price does not reflect quality; that knife companies can produce a very good folder at a very reasonable price and the rest is marketing and hype.
i would be interested to hear the opinions of others on this, especially as my sample size is rather small.

Boker is a good brand. But from what I've seen all production slipjoints are hit and miss.

I've got around 200 stockmans in my collection. only Case has been consistent in all the details so far. I have a beautiful Boker in tortoise shell with lazy blades. A Hen&Roster With a bent blade. A Queen with a burr on the bolster. And the list go's on. I also have the same brands that are outstanding. My over all experience is that the American made slipjoints have been more consistent throughout the price spectrum. There have been some pleasant surprises with some of the lower priced slipjoints. I picked up a Rough Rider in MOP and one in fake abalone at $7.00 each and was impressed with how nice they looked.
