Boker ceramics?

Anyone have any experience with these? The benefits of a ceramic blade had me sold...but an earlier thread has kinda got me second-guessing Boker.

I'm thinking about getting a gamma; I'd considered going for the infinity...but the gamma seems like a better place to start and test the waters, so to speak.

Thoughts?

An important consideration is that ceramic is much harder than steel, meaning it's much harder to sharpen. Since ceramic stones are common sharpening materials, you might have to spring for diamond sharpeners to maintain it.

Also, I seem to remember that you're not suppose to use ceramic blades on some stuff because it could chip or mess with the edge. I remember it was related to food, I just can't remember what off the top of my head.

You can sharpen ceramics knives on most abrasives, I regound a few broken tips with cheap aluminum oxide sanding belts.

Hi,

I own a Gamma and like it very much. I frequently use it as EDC when at school. I did manage to make a tiny chip on the blade by accidentally cutting thru some food and chopping into the dinner plate (maybe that's what Simon was referring to?). Other than that, my blade has held up thru lots of use and I haven't sharpened it ever since I bought it. It's a bit pricey for a small knife, but if treated carefully, will give you years of reliable service.

I have owned a couple of Boker Ceramics over the past 10 or so years. I wouldn't worry so much about being able to sharpen them unless they are going to see heavy use. I never needed to sharpen either of mine using them with some degree of frequency. However, if you should need to sharpen them, I think Boker is somewhat reasonable with their charges for resharpening and will do it, keeping the warranty active. Otherwise, they are not as brittle as I was afraid. Granted I've never tried to pry anything with them, I have never had an issue.

And don’t overlook the infinity model. It’s one of the two that I have and I don’t regret having bought it.
