Boker Congress?

I'm trying to expand my knives a little, trying new patterns and makers, so to kill two birds with one stone I am looking at a Boker German made Congress.

Anyone have any feedback on them?

The red jigged or grand canyon bone series are the front runners.

I'm not sure about the new ones, but I just ordered a 4-bladed congress and razor/pen Barlow from discountcutlery.net. I had a 4-bladed congress I sort of liberated from my dad when I was a kid, and to this day that was the sharpest knife I've ever owned, judging by the scars I got from it. (Of course, that could be because my dad was sharpening them instead of me lol.) I've been sort of down on Boker because of their Magnum and Argentine-made knives, but I think the German-made ones are still high quality, particularly when you can find the carbon steel versions (which the ones I ordered are). You might also want to check out Bulldog, Opinel, Eye Brand, and Kissing Crane, if you haven't already. That website I ordered from has lots of carbon steel pocket knives. The two I ordered have carbon steel blades, the frosted etch on the main blade, and jigged bone handles. Great prices, and some of the the most beautiful knives (IMO) made.

Thanks Keith, Can you or anyone tell me how to know by looking at a website picture if a Boker is the Chinese made line?

I am websearching and find that most websites don't say.

TLC,

You could also post in the Manufacturers forums...in the Boker forum. I'm sure that TJT could tell you if any of the traditional patterns are made in Argentina or China. Maybe even if there is a way to tell about carbon/stainless blades.

Just a thought for some confirmation on you question.

Bill
EDIT: Ha, ha, I see you quizzed him on another steel question as well. LOL.

Yeah, I don't know where he got the idea that Buck uses 420J.

I will ake my china question over there and see what he says, I have found a couple of really nice looking Stag Congress by Boker online, but am afraid to order until I know for sure they are German.

I recently got a Boker 5464 as my first Congress. It is a bit pricey, but the best Boker I have (my fifth) as far as quality feel and walk and talk. It as solid half-stops and the jigged brown bone scales are real purty too.

The red bone series is made in Germany:

The red bone classic series is definitely carbon steel, and the Boker USA website suggests by way of its steel chart that it's 1095.

The Chinese slippoints are should be designated "Boker Magnum Bonsai."

According to the Boker catalog, some or all of the Chinese stuff is 420j. :barf:

I don't know that you could tell from a small picture -- you may have to count on it being an honest dealer. Also, although there is a Chinese congress, I don't think there is a Chinese congress with stepped bolsters.
Hope that helps!

Over in the Boker forum TJT also told me that the Chinese stuff has model numbers that start with an "SC".

Seriously drolling over a Grand Canyon series stepped bolster one, I am finding that some models have a spearpoint blade instead of 2 sheepsfoot, and I'm left handed and the spearpoint blade is nail nicked for a left-handed opening.

That may tip the scales on whichever one I buy.

Well that didn't take long, just on a goof tonight I searched Ebay for "Boker AND Congress", and found a Grand Canyon bone, carbon bladed on about to end with a bid of only 22.00, so with 2 minutes left I tossed in a bid and got it for 24.51.

I really like the looks of the Grand Canyon bone, sorta reminds me of the wormgroove bone on some of my S&M's.
