I couldn't help myself and went an bought it. This is a big knife - OAL nearly 16", blade is 10" long, 2.75+" wide, 3/16" thick of 440c & 16 oz. Here's a pic - http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=234579&a=1742341&p=21218417. It came very sharp - on both sides. THe sheath is cordura. It has an integral guard with canvas micarta handles. The grip lock your hand in and is very secure thanks to the channels cut into the micarta.

From a design standpoint it's a big fat leaf shaped dagger. It will chop but but it's not a khukri. It's one of those big knives that you would fell really happy to when it's dark and the adrenelin is flowing. IMHO, it's more a fighting blade than a utility knife. It's well balanced and surprisingly fast in the hand. It's a great cut and thrust weapon - perhaps short-short sword. It was just what I wanted!

Loki, you're a wild man. Where'd you get all those knives??? You could be a retail outlet. Hmmm.... Loki's Knife Emporium. Has a nice ring to it.

The Smatchet looks all business to me. Just my type. Have fun and don't cut yourself.

Imagine my surprise when I clicked on Loki's link and it led me to my photopoint site. I guess he just needed a picture of the Smatchet for you all to see. Oh well, enjoy.

I'm not sure which one of us you want to answer that question, but I got mine at a gun show in Richmond, VA. I purchased it from a dealer for $200.

I am really interested in getting one now. I have been wanting to get a basic 9 for a year now, but now this smatchet comes out of nowhere and is giving me a headache with this decision. I'm only willing to get one, so can anyone comment on whether the smatchet is a knife cappable of handling everything a busse might be asked to do, or is it more of a collectors display knife? I'm worried about the 440C chipping since I have never seen it used on a knife this size before. Is the sheath good quality nylon?

I had one but sold it. It is a very well made blade but in no way is it as heavy duty as a Busse. The issue that I had with it was not the quality of the knife but that second edge. It is the long and sharp edge stairing you right in the face very easy to make a mistake and your looking at a severe wound. Not very practical for a camp tool especialy if your out in the woods away from civilization. It does chop very well. As a fighter it in my opinion has few pears.

HDCharlie:

Sorry if I misled folks but you had the best picture I've seen of this knife! Your collection is very impressive. Again, I apoligize if I offended.

For the rest...

I don't see this as a utility knife - I don't think it can compete with something like a Busse to for that matter an HI Khukri - it's too thin and the 440c might not be the right steel. I think it's a really big fighter.

Loki, there was no offense intended and so none taken. Just imagine the look of consternation on my face when I clicked on your link and were whisked to pictures of my knives. Whoa, what a rush. It took a few seconds to figure out what happened. In case you need any other links, I just added a few more of my pieces to the site.

Ek Commando Knives are selling their knives directly to customers. No if I could just find their catalog. Hopefully someone else has their catalog to hand so that you can get their contact information.

I have a question: Is Murphy Combat Knives still around?

Christopher,
Uwe Hoffmann is from Canada, and if you like the combat bowie, you would really like his version of the smatchet. You can contact him at 604-572-7320. Also, there is an article on him in the May 98 issue of Tactical Knives.
The MMHW knives are extremely heavy duty working blades. Ted Frizzell makes the blades from 5160 and they are as tough as they come.
The Ek Combat Knife Co. is advertising in all the recent issues of Blade. I have quite a few of the early Richmond and Blackjack Eks, but I haven't seen any of the newest product.

Oops! haven't done that in a while.
