Boker Gnome Scale Removal? HIGH POLISH PICS

For those of you with a Gnome, is it possible to remove the scales in order to sand and polish the knife? I've heard it was riveted and they cannot be removed. I suppose I could cover the scales and try to polish the rest, but I'd rather remove them completely and do it right.

Thanks in advance!

I got the Gnome and decided to try and polish it with the scales on. I was concerned about damaging the scales and not being able to get close enough to the scale edges. The results turned out great. First the scales and red inner liner held up great to the sanding and polish. There was no issue. At times you could see some micarta or liner residue in the sandpaper, but overall things went very well.

Man that is nice. Good job. Thanks for sharing with us.

That polish job looks awesome.

I have been thinking about getting one of these as a smaller carry knife for the office than my BK11. How is the quality of these knives as far as fit, finish and sheath?

I think there are two types of sheaths, maybe three. Make sure you know which one you're getting. I prefer the tapered version like shown above. I think there is a box/flat top version. I can't speak to that version.

My Gnome was purchased used. I can't speak for new. The sheath was reasonably tight. I've seen videos where people have to apply thumb pressure on the sheath to remove the Gnome, but I don't think it's required. Tight but not too tight. For example I have a break away fastener on the paracord, but I can draw the Gnome without breaking the fastener.

As purchased the Gnome quality was great. The steel is soft stainless 12cr27 (I think), but it's easy to sharpen and can reach a razor edge quickly. Unlike Becker carbon blades.

The scales are fine and the fit and finish is clean and tight. I'm a 7 on the perfectionist scale. For a $30 knife I was 100% satisfied. I did add a small paracord lanyard with a button knot (false turks head) so I have a better grip on the handle. Not needed, but I like it.

I was set on polishing the knife on arrival. There was a China logo that had to go. The scales are tight and the liners are hard and a maroon/dull brick red.

I don't think there is anything better for a small neck knife. It is super cool IMO and the blade shape is functional. I wouldn't recommend it for a primary blade since the edge can dull quickly but it's is a great backup.

I just bought myself a Gnome from a gun show yesterday and I love it! Small little edc that's good for all the little chores and tasks around the ranch.

I decided to add to my gnome collection with a gnew gnome in olive wood. With a matching gnome bead too. Very nice with the wood scales. This is actually my third one, the first two arrived with cracked scales.
