i was wondering what everyone thought of the Boker Kalashnikov. i was looking at it but wanted to know if they are any good before i looked into buying it.
thanks

I bought one a couple of weeks ago. I haven't put it through much of a test, but my initial comments would be:

GOOD
1. It's very sharp...it will shave hair and zips through paper.
2. The lock is very tight. There is no blade play at all.
3. The fit of the handle in my hand is probably better than any knife I own.
4. It is a reasonable weight for its size

NOT SO GOOD
1. The opening action was very tight on mine. It takes both thumb and index finger to get it going, but it is loosening up a bit.

At the price, I don't mind carrying it for rough jobs like working in the garden or around my boat.

I have owned two of them in the past, back before I knew anything about steels, grinds, construction or anything else important about knives for that matter. I think they are horrible for the price they charge for them. I had the original, satin finish, grey model first, and sent it back to Boker because it came with rust speckels on the blade, a very dull factory edge and a missing spine screw. They replaced it with the plain edged black version at my request, but I never really liked the feel of the knife, and it had such a mediocre steel for a high end knife. I mean, 440C on a $150 knife? I sold it for 100 bucks recently, and I'm glad to be rid of it.

You mean the Aka 47.

440C on a high end knife is found elsewhere, this Darrel Ralph combat folder features it, some Benchmades. At least, 440C is quite a good steel and Boker uses it for long.

I can´t tell if they get it good but generally a steel used often by a factory is better than a exotc type.

I had the Aka 74 automatic which was right at the price. They show little play.

I gave it to a friend as a present and he uses it over a year on a daily basis. He is fine with it. I had the chance to resharpen it twice and the lock was sligthly worn but still works.

The manual version should make it better, but try a spinewhack before you keep it.

The Boker KAL74 models - button lock or liner lock - are excellent value for money and impressed me for the quality of the knife at that price. I believe they are now being produced with pocket clips which is great news. Good little heft and feel of quality.

They certainly represent better value and performance than the current run of most CRKT knives.
