BOKER LANCER
Designer: Serge Panchenko
Blade Thickness: 0.10 in
Blade Length: 3.0 in
Weight: 2.4 oz
Total Length: 7.0 in
Handle Material: G10
Locking Mechanism: Liner Lock
Blade Material: CPM-s35vn (first production), 440c (normal production)
This knife was offered to me for review at a discount.
Right off the bat this Boker presents this knife in a very nice box with a magnetic closure, which makes it great for gift giving. Even though the box does little more than hold the product I for one appreciate a nice box as I hold onto all of them (for some reason). In the box comes the standard paperwork and a torx tool for knife service. The Lancer is a very simple yet effective design that gives you everything you need in a locking knife and not much else. The knife and pocket clip are very flat and unobtrusive which allows it to disappear into your pocket. The first production of the Lancer (500 units) come with a CPM-s35vn blade with the normal production coming with a 440c blade.
Unlike the Patriot that I recently reviewed the Lancer blade rides on nylon washers that have proven themselves time and time again with other knife models and manufacturers. As you can see from the exploded pictures this one can be completely disassembled and reassembled with the provided tool. While this is a liner lock knife you can also see from the disassembled pictures that the liner is only as big as is necessary to serve as the lock. Though the pivot has a provision on both sides for a torx driver the end of it is indexed so that the show side scale holds it for you while disassembling or adjusting it. Right out of the box the centering on mine was good, the lock up was solid/early, the detent was great and the blade action was smooth. Also right out of the box, which you sometimes dont see, the blade grind was even and it was shaving sharp.
Bokers colaberation with a very unique designer leaves us with an affordable yet unique design for EDC. This seems to fill the niche for people looking for a nice, lightweight knife that can be carried to the office or in shorts with absolutely no problem. Below it is pictured with a couple contenders that are in the same weight class and fill the same niche for me anyway as the Lancer, the Kershaw Skyline at 7.4 in/2.5 oz and the Spyderco Delica 4 at 7.125 in/2.5 oz. Serge Panchenko is known for other designs like the Bean, the CoinClaw and the DogTag. The Lancer is reminiscent of those designs but is a more EDC friendly/useful package which offers the normal guy a chance at one of his designs without breaking the bank.
