Been trying to put more of a kit together recently, for general survival/bushcraft type activities, and am pretty new to the whole game. Have my eye on a bark river woodland special/PSK or a Tops Ute #02 in terms of a small knife, (the only knife I own is a Mora Clipper - like I said, I'm new to all this), and am wondering would you folks recommend those for a small edc knife? And secondly I want a big knife for tasks like de-limbing/wood processing etc, so a machete/golok type knife. This one has me more stumped as to what is a good option: I DID have my eye on the Buck Hoodlum, but saw quite a few YouTube videos of them breaking, so today i spotted a lovely Boker Magnum knife called the Great West, but for the life of me cant find a review! Does anyone know about it? I know its not a HUGE knife, but it is big. Otherwise, what would you guys recommend? :)

Thanks!!!

For a small knife, look at the Becker bk-14 or rat izula.

For the same price as the booker, you could get yourself a knife more suited to woods use.
Kabar makes a knife called the heavy bowie that works great for chopping and splitting.

I used to baton this knife with a hammer. I gave it to my brother a few years back and he has yet to break it.

The Ontario spec plus knives are great and there are a few in thus large knife range. Also the RD-9 from ontario's ranger series gets great reviews.

Many on this forum tote Becker bk-9s as their chopper, but I have smallish hands so the be ker handles are a bit big for my tastes.

Personally, I prefer to carry a high quality custom 3-4" blade and an axe or machete for chopping. I have yet to find a knife that chops as well as a good axe with the proper edge geometry.

ahhh, you're seeing the sheer lack of talk about boker blades and brands. its very hard to find a wide range of talk on all boker products on forums, about boker knives and/or info.. there is of course the boker forum here. it's slow moivng though, but usually you'll get feed back on your question eventually.

if you like boker brands......for the small one i like the boker plus krein psk. i haven't bought one yet to try it out, but i like the design and look of it.

on the great west. i'm not a big fan of the magnum boker brand blades. for a bit more money i'd go the route of a esee 6, or a becker bk7. the becker being about the same price as that boker magnum. the esee has a no questions asked lifetime warranty on the knife. you break it, doing stupid stuff with it, doesn't matter, they'll replace it. ka-bar/becker has, i believe, as good a warranty as well. i'd prefer either of those for a harder use knife to chop stuff as you described....but thats me and you are you.

Thanks so much for your replies, Im having a look at the ontario spec plus knives and they definitely seem good! I know what you mean about the handle cos' i have quite small hands too and dont want something cumbersome! The Boker knife was more for looks lol, but thats not a good enough reason to buy it. Yeah I'll be getting an axe too for chopping, the machete/large bowie i want for tasks like taking off small branches quickly and making small sticks for fires.

Thanks again
