Hi I already posted this question in general knife discussion, but someone said to post it in the manufacturers forum, so here it is: Does anyone have experience with the Boker Magnum "The Great West" knife? It looks lovely, but who knows. I need a big knife. Ive been pointed towards some others already in the forum, but I still want to know what that one is like, thanks!!

Boker US is clearing out many of the Magnum models(i just got the mailer they sent me out ) and seems they are on the website as well....might try one of those first.

Yeah thats the knife, you're right it does seem a bit over priced, but I'm looking for a big knife and that one appeals to me looks wise, but was just wondering if anyone had used it. Cant find any reviews at all for it, youtube or elsewhere! Strange! Oh well, thanks!

Honestly in the US you don't find many folks into Boker, least has been my experience. Don't let that dissuade you, I think they have great products all over the price scale...get on their physical mailing list too... they do nice catalog offerings now and then.

I own six different Boker Magnum or Plus large fixed blades and of them all, I prefer the Great West. It is well made, beautiful to look at and most important, it feels best in my hand. The fact that it is the only Bowie knife I have or have seen that is sharp on the top of the blade for 1/3 of its length. For use, this is a major plus. It lists for $100 but can be bought for less.

Finally someone who has used one! :P What is your main use for this knife? I would be using it as a survival/bushcraft large knife for things like shelter building: de-limbing branches, and maybe a little bit of batoning wood. You think it would hold up well to these conditions? And wet, as I live in Ireland :P Must say though, gorgeous knife!!

I think it would serve your purposes well with one thing to watch out for: since this is not an integral knife, the blade, though full tang, has small space between finger guard. This means that water could drip in and you would likely have to seal this with something or dry the knife well each time. With heavy moisture conditions you may want to limit yourself to an integral knife and in that case I would recommend the Bokerd Plus Schanz dagger, made in Taiwan, which has the size and weight you want and will weather well. Drawback is it lists at twice the price of the Great West.
I do not use these fixed blades but have them in my collection. My everyday use knife is a Boker Plus Reality Based serrated folder and I use a machetee or hatchet in the woods.

Thanks so much for the reply trying to get an opinion on this for ages!! Yeah I know what you mean about the space where water could get in. Hmm. Could be a problem. The dagger type blade though, I don't think would suit, as I might need to put my hand on one side of the blade at times. I might have to look at another option then. Boker have some other ones that are a little out of my price range, while lovely. Usability is most important to me.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE SCHANZ:
