I have been looking for a good working stockman for edc, I want good edge retention and very good F+F. I have been looking at the Large Queen Stockman from Cumberland Knife Works for $48, and the large Boker Stockman from Knifeworks for $39.99. I would post pics or a link, but this crappy library computer won't let me copy and paste. I recently bought a Queen Country Cousin and it is unuseable because the edge is so thick, I don't want to get the Queen if it is going to come with the same edge the Country Cousin did. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'll tell ya...

I love buying American made products
I love selling American made products

However, in my experience, the Boker stockman is a better knife - out of the box - than the Queen.

Now, I have about 15 Boker slippies. They are all excellent. Copperheads, whittlers, stockmans - doesn't matter. All are excellent.
I have 8 Queen slippies. I had to send a large toothpick back because of blade wobble at the pivot. None of the others had a sharp edge out of the box. Fit and finish are so-so.

ONE big exception - the Queen Abalone stockman.
I have two of those. Fit, finish and edge were all excellent right out of the box. But of course they are at a different price point.

So I'm recommending the Boker, much as I'd rather be recommending the Queen.

1. I would probably go with the queen cutlery stockman.

2. Learn to sharpen a knife. No knife wil be unuseable due to a thick edge, as you will be able to put on almost any edge bevel that you prefer.

I know how to sharpen a knife very well, but I hate trying to reprofile D2, it is a P.I.T.A. and I don't have a very course benchstone to make the process faster.

You might consider spending a few bucks on a new 8 inch mill bastard file that you can then use to change or thin the bevel on your QCC. Then you can probably sharpen it down into a nice, usable edge.

I have an old Queen English Jack that I really like, but I don't know what their current production is like. Boker still makes most of its knives in Germany as far as I know, and I'm sure they are good quality. But they also make a yellow handled Sodbuster and Sodbuster Jr. in Argentina and those are very good buys. I own both and I really like them. They are just simple, straightforward high carbon blades in a design that works well for a wide variety of purposes. I ordered mine from www.eknifeworks.com (SMKW) for about $13 and $11 respectively I think. Try and beat that for a bargain!

Thanks for the info. I think I am going to get the Boker Stockman and a Large and possibly a Small Sodbuster. Now I need to find a good whittler.
