Just want to get a new EDC. Thinking of either the Boker Subcom folder with black grip -- I like the looks but want function as well. Also did not see it in serrated but thought it might come that way.

OR

Spyderco Native or Byrd Robin or Byrd Raven?

Oppinions on either brand and /or knife?
Also vote for or against Serrated and why?

Thanks for the input

months ago i got a tan subcom, which is serrated, to replace my worn out super knife as a general work knife. its held up very well, for the price its hard to beat. normally i dislike serrations, but they just seem to work on this knife.

Of all these knives, I've only handled the Native, but have heard great things about all of them. Some people like the Native, others not so much. I personally liked it. You can check out the Natives at your local Walmart if you want to get your hands on one before buying.

I haven't handled any of the Byrds, but they look good and I trust Spyderco. The Native is one of the great classic knives of all time.

Having said that, I do love my plain-edge Subcom and will probably get the tan combo edge. They also have an all-black combo edge. They also have a new folder out called the Trance, which is about the size of the Native, but with the Subcom's technology. Excellent knife.

Someday you should get that Native but I recommend you pick up a Subcom or Trance now.

Byrds rule... but I've never handled a Subcom.
The steels between the 2 look to be close. AUS8 and 8Cr13MoV (that's a mouthful)

I personally like blades a wee bit longer then the Boker's.

Serrated v. Non-serrated depends on what you are using it for.

I usually choose non-serrated for my edc since sharpening it
for the long term is easier and it allows for more control over cutting.

Opening a letter with a serrated blade can be dangerous to the contents. :-)
(or maybe it's just me)

I am only a fan of Bokers slippies and they're Arbolito knives, but I don't any Bokers right now. That said, I really like the Native III, I would go for the Native. Depending on what you're going to be doing with the knife. I have never held a Subcom. But, a Native should cover the average tasks thrown at it.

Get the native if you can. The first gen natives are in S30V and for the price of around 45ish you cant beat it. I've held byrds, they feel good, but for a little bit more you can get the s30V in the native.

An S30V Native is currently my EDC, and I've had it for about a year. Despite breaking the tip of a few months ago this thing just keeps on slicing. S30V is awesome steel, it can hold an edge for a LONG time...Having said that, I wish I'd bought a delica instead. Ergonomically, the Native is an enigma. When I'm just fondling the knife, choking up on the grip, using the index finger groove at the base of the blade it feels really nice, and yet I NEVER handle it like that in actual use. I want a plain-edge Delica...

i'm a Spydernut, but my Boker Wharcom has easily replaced my old g10 Navigator as a small EDC. i use it a lot and prefer the straight edge for ease of sharpening.

I have a Native III in VG10 steel. I agree that for the knife to be comfortable in my hand, I need to use the choil. But that is the way I use the blade, so for me, it works. I've got a Delica as well. I prefer the Native III. The Native III just feels better in my hand. Looks better, too, IMO.

The same here. Native is great knife. You can get S30V blade for $40. It is the great deal, great ergos, one of the best steels, finger choil.

I agree on the looks. It's one secksy EDC knife, but the ergo's turned out to be a miss for me... *shrug* Try before you buy I guess...I'm not sorry I bought it for sure...it's just not optimal for me...
