Hello!
There are many exceptional knives in the world of cutlery, but the one below became my real EDC Grail!
Boker Plus Kwaiken Flipper Damast
This unique knife was designed by Lucas Burnley and it is manufactured by the Boker company. There are many different versions of the Kwaiken flipper, but the combination of the damascus blade together with the handle scales made of titanium is my favorite one.
The 9,0 cm hollow ground blade is made of Damasteels martensitic stainless damascus steel. It is a powder based steel with the two very good alloys RWL 34 and PMC 27. The beautiful pattern is probably the Odin's Eye as is clear from Damasteel data sheet.
Out of the box the blade was scary sharp and in my taste it performs similar or even better as the CPM S35VN steel. With the fine grain structure it cuts very smoothly, holds the edge very well and can be easily sharpened. Of course additionally this perfect blade looks gorgeous!
The blade is mounted on ball bearing IKBS system and thus opens very quickly and smoothly. It is my first flipper and it has the fastest opening action compared to all my knives. I just can't stop flipping it since a month! When you start, it gives you similar satisfying feeling as the addictive bubble wrap popping
Overall length of the knife is 21,3 cm. It has very good liner lock mechanism with the stainless steel liners. There is no blade play and the knife can be operated very fast and easily in one hand. The blade has thickness of 3,2 mm. The handle scales and a solid backspacer are made of titanium and have nice satin finish.
But the most unique part is a masterful handle design. Among dozens of my knives it is the only one which has the blade completely hidden in the handle! No matter if the blade is open or closed the grip is very comfortable and ergonomic. After opening the flipper/guard part becomes simultaneously a very useful finger choil which I really like during the precision cuts.
I think that the use of a knife for a self defence is the last thing in the world that you would like to do. But not with the amazing Kwaiken. 153 g of the knife weight, the sturdy simple design and 12,3 cm of the handle lenght, make that the knife becomes a real Kubotan! Tapered shape at the one end complemented by the titanium backspacer is very strong (can be used also as a glass breaker), while the second end is perfectly matched for the inner side of a thumb. The pocket clip is exactly in the place where it should be. It gives the stable base for the ring finger during the opening action and for the pinky when handling as Kubotan.
