Boker Pocket Bowie vs Gent's Scalpel

I'm looking for a small, non-threatening looking and relatively inexpensive fixed blade for EDC. I was thinking the A.G. Russell Woodswalker, but the self-guard is vestigial (if they fixed that, the Woodswalker is what I'd go for). I'm ruling out larger knives such as the BK11/14, the Izula, the Wharning because of their size, appearance, and cost. Bark Rivers are out because they cost way too much. Hartsooks/Smidgens are out because they're too small to manipulate.

I'm wondering if anyone with experience of the Pocket Bowie and the Scalpel could tell me which has the more secure grip and the more positive guard. I'm leaning toward the Scalpel as it looks more like a vanilla knife, but neither are in my local B&Ms.

Thanks.

I have the Pocket Bowie and the Gent's Scalpel. They are both really good knives. Both offer secure grips in my opinion just in different ways. First off I have large hands (I've busted open a pair or two of XXL gloves) and find both knives quite comfortable. The Pocket Bowie has a thicker more contoured handle that offers a very secure three finger grip. The Gent's Scalpel is more straight handled, slim, and offers (even for my big hands) a full four finger grip. As for the guard question you would have to be doing something crazy to get your hands to slip up past either of the guards. The guards aren't huge by any means but with the secure grip both handles offer the guards are more than enough. Both offer about the same in regards to finger protection, with the only difference being the Pocket Bowie has an integral guard and the Gent's scalpen being a seperate guard pinned to the tang. I took some crappy cell pictures to help you try to compare. Hope this helps.

Great comparison pics.... I've been eyeing the Gent Scalpel. My last Boker Plus were rust magnets... hopefully these are better.

Bobo: Thanks for the fast reply and VERY helpful pics. Looks like I've got some thinking to do which to get!

EK20: Pink isn't low-profile and the overall length is greater than either of the Bokers. The aim is to carry around non-knife people. You and I see the Izula as a small utility knife; others see the width of the blade and freak. Narrow but usable and "plain Jane" is what I want.

The izula is shorter than the gent's scalpel....
