Looking at Boker pocketknives there are some selling for around $40 and the same like patterns for double the cost at least. What’s the difference? Are some made in China?

I think you hit it on the head, some made in China and the others probably Germany or in Argentina.

Boker is all over the place. They outsource some of their manufacturing as well. If you're looking for decent quality just stay away from their Magnum line and you should be ok. A lot of the Plus line is also made in China, but the quality is higher.

I agree to stay away from Magnum. Boker has at least 3 main divisions: Magnum, Plus and Tree Brand which is made in Germany. My experience is that the Plus line has some decent blades, but the ones from Germany tend to be their best pieces but prices reflect that too. Just my 2 cents worth.

Böker manufaktur: Germany
Böker plus: Depends on model (mostly China)
Böker magnum: Really cheap Chinese models
Böker Arbolito: Argentina (iirc)

Sounds to me as if you are asking about Boker Traditional Pocket knives, such as a trapper or stockman.
The less expensive ones are made in China. I have one and it's a decently made product.
The more expensive ones are made in Germany.
Aside from the price, the way to tell is to see if they say "Solingen" on the tang of the blade.
"Solingen", not "Germany". There are trade associations in Germany which tightly control the use of the "Solingen" marking.

If it says Solingen on the blade or shield, then it was made in Solingen. The Böker knives only marked Germany have some foreign components or assembly.

helpful information,
and here i thought with the surplus of 11.99 priced boker knives, that they've fallen really far from grace, still ---
i thoroughly respect a knife company that keeps their map pricing consistent throughout the years and always produce a quality product, instead of the plethora of companies that engage in unscrupulous business practices like cutting corners in QC, getting greedy and stamping their logo on products made with inferior steel and parts

FTW :) Phenomenal Knife in all areas.
