Looks Impressive. Anyone have any hands on experience with this blade. Id like your opinions. thanks

I like mine. A good knife for double duty-weapon and bushwacker. It's a fun toy, but it wouldn't be my first choice to take in the bush. For that I would take my HKR and/or Wasp, from Newt Livesay.

I really like mine - it's the micarta handled 440c version. However, it depends on what your expectations of the blade are. If your looking for a hacker get a HI khukri. If you want a blade to pick out splinters get something other than the smatchet. I see the smatchet more as a big fighter than utility blade - think really fat dagger.

The edge is a bit on the thick side but it is sharp - it's not a blade for delicate work. I like this setup as it can withstand a bit of abuse. I've used it to slash and stab cardboard and pool noodles. Real nasty! If you need a thinner edge it should be easy to do using a diamond hone. I like to think of it as a midget gladius.

the boker one with composite handle is listed at ebay for around $130.
i wonder ifits got the same blade as the model with micarta grips. i believe its got a blade of 420 stainless.

The blade shape/grind appears to be the same - just different steel. I think the 420hc should work just fine if you limit chopping on tough materials (trees, rocks, cars, etc.).

I thought the smatchet was used for german sentries in WWII, do they still make replicas?

i believe the only current production is made by boker. there are a few custom makers who offer em too.

i just saw a pic of the al mar smatchet. beautiful grind. it looks hollow ground. LOKI... or anyone know the grind on the boker model. it looks flat ground but all the pics ive seen are pretty bad.

this is the only pic i can find. almost impossible to see grinds.

Hey Guys...

I've handled a couple of them....

Although they are a Way cool looking blade..Extremely well made,,and I'd love to own one,,, I wouldn't carry one in the bush if it was given to me....

In my opinion,,it is by far the most dangerous knife I've ever held...

Other than the faxct that once it gets dull you can turn it around and use the other side,,it has very little practical use other than a Wall Hanger and or conversation piece...

This is one knife with Major potential to cause Serious injury to the user...

Besides,,the sheath is Big and Ugly..:)

Other than that,,a Great knife to have in a collection...

like he said.

those are the exact reasons I can't bring myself to put down cash for it. maybe one day, when I have a thick wad in my wallet and there are no other knives I can buy in the store nor any I wanna put an order down for... yeah right, that'll be the day!

Well, don´t say it isn´t versatile enough- It´s the only knife that can replace a frypan.:)

I´m getting serious now...
Böker produced two versions of the Smatchet last year, the A-F Smatchet Standard, made of 4034 Steel with a polycarbonate handle, and the A-F Smatchet, made of 440C with a micarta handle. The latter version was individually numbered , and 1200 knives have been produced. The production of the A-F Smatchet Standard continues, but the 440C model is no longer available from Böker Germany.

I'll agree that the Smatchet isn't the most practical bush or survival blade. Personally I like my HI Khuks better for outdoor chores. IMHO - the Smatchet is a large fat dagger and should be threated as such. In that role it shouldn't be any more dangerous to the user than any other double edged blade or large heavy knife.
