Hi!
Today I would like to show you another exceptional knife in my collection - Boker Special Run Haddock Zirconium
Zirconium is a very high density metal and is a refractory material. Although it is not so hard as diamond, zirconium has almost twice as higher density. After two months of carrying the Haddock I have no any scratches on the beautiful handle.
Thanks to its strength Zirconium is mainly exploited in the extremely high temperatures environment. It does not absorb neutrons, so more than 90% of zirconium is used in nuclear reactors and nuclear submarines. Zirconium metal has also a very high resistance to corrosion by acids, alkalis and seawater.
Due to the nice dark shiny look Zirconium is used for the handle scales by the best custom knifemakers, but German company Boker has developed Haddock Special Run limited series as a first serial production knife with this unique metal.
The knife was designed by Jens Anso and as the premium class knife it was manufactured in the Boker manufactory Solingen. Haddock construction is very simple and thanks to that this is an elegant sturdy knife. It has framelock system, with no blade play whatsoever. Soft curves of the handle and wide blade spine give very good grip. All precision works are also nicely supported by a comfortable finger choil which together with a modified sheepsfoot blade gives the complete control of the knife.
The blade is perfectly centered and it has length of 8,5 cm with thickness of 4,3 mm. It is made of my favorite CPM S35VN premium steel which cuts very smoothly, holds the edge very well and it can be easily resharpened. Out of the box the knife shaved hairs with ease. The grind is very similar to a straight razor because Haddock has the full hollow ground blade.
One side of the handle is made of Zirconium with nice luster and deep color after the oxidation process. Second, framelock side is made of Titanium with the same satin finish as in case of the blade.
Due to the nail nick Haddock has two hands opening system, but I always open its wide blade by one hand very easily, no matter if I do it by right or left hand.
Total length of the knife is 19,5 cm. It is full metal construction and the weight is 141 g. There is a lanyard hole at the end of the handle.
I choose to carry the knife with tip down in my pocket, but the clip can be mounted conversely, thus the knife can be also carried with tip up, if you like. Small red sack is included in the box.
