I've always wanted to shave with a straight razor. I remember it from a childhood, but when I was in a high school I could not find straight razors anywhere and I bought an unsuccessful shaving substitute, some kind of a hair thinning razor, the shavette with replaceable blades.
I've tried to shave with it, but did not work out, because the shavette was too thick behind the razor edge, adhering to the skin, with many hairs quickly clogged inside.
Some time ago I accidentally found a straight razors again, so now I already shave with the excellent straight razor:
Böker Rasiermesser Tree Brand Brown Canvas Micarta, 5/8"
According to what is written in the package leaflet, the Boker high quality straight razors have been manufactured since the foundation of the factory in 1869. The production of straight razors was gradually discontinued after World War II. Today a new and exclusive line of the Boker straight razors is manufactured completely by hand in Solingen, reviving the old tradition.
I'm glad, because this tradition matches up perfectly for a such freak like me.
In the fast paced world of today a speed of mach 3 and a g10 load factor 'are important', and yet the art of shaving with a straight razor takes some time, especially the first shaving with a straight razor.

The compact 5/8 " blade is made out of the carbon steel with high edge retention. The blade behind the edge is flat but the concave is in the middle. The handle is made of the brown canvas micarta, which does not absorb water as wood and provides a very good grip. The historical "Tree Brand" logo is etched on the traditional hollow ground blade and the authentic Boker stamp is on the shank.
The Razor was delivered in a little box that can be used simultaneously to its storage. It is a stiff cardboard glued to a some kind of canvas outside. The box is pretty solid, and I guess that the inner side of the box is used for an absorption of moisture.
Straight razor itself is not enough for a shaving, so I ordered also some shaving accessories manufactured by the Boker.
I used the "Top Finish" two-sided leather sharpener before the first shaving. Its surface is uniformly smooth and soft but under the surface is firm and tough.
The Silvertip Fiber shaving brush is made of a modern synthetic fibers. It is delicate but stronger than natural hair and it dries better. Together with water, using a small amount of shaving soap this brush creates a very creamy lather.
Aloe Vera Shaving Soap is inside the white porcelain bowl with a lid. Is quite heavy and stable during imposing a soap on the brush. The soap is very efficient and has a very pleasant smell.
The Böker Rasierschale elegant and heavy bowl in black porcelain with a platinised edge effectively helps to prepare a creamy lather, because the soap can move on the side walls and the shaving brush works with entire volume.
After sharpening I applied a lather on my face and I started to shave. I read previously that the beginner should put shoes on his feet because the straight razor could cut the toes when falling from hand.
I had some trouble with proper razor keeping, but I took a chance and I remained in slippers.
My first shave with a straight razor was very, very exciting, especially an area around the carotid was very emotional.
Now I'm already after four shaves, and every time I'm doing it better and faster.
To sum up - straight razor works great - I highly recommend it.
