Boker Subcom Titan and such. LOW VISABILITY.

I have been looking for a small discreet folder in the $25-45 range. Tip up or down does not matter. I work in a professional environment and would like a clip with low visibility that doesn't draw any attention when I whip it out to cut a bag of chips or a zip tie at a church project. The Subcom seems to fit my bill but the Titan is more than I want to spend. Seems like the age old problem of QUALITY COSTS! I would consider any value option and would take advice from Chinese Junk to inexpensive Spyderco's.

I have seen a fair amount of reviews that advises that the Subcom other than the titan are far less appealing.

Objective

*Discreet
*under $45
*Non Threatening
*Durable

Advice from any long time carriers of the desired blade is A BONUS!

Actually, it's "discreet"; "discrete" means separate. The standard Subcom should do just fine. You can either blacken the clip with ferric chloride or cover it with black 3M tread tape. If you'll note, Knifecenter lists the weights of the standard and the Titan as only 0.2 ounces difference. Not enough IMO to justify the cost, and I've never had quality issues with any of the Boker Plus CLB models. That is unless you really don't like AUS-8 steel, which is a solid performer but not a wondersteel by any means.

If you want a really low-profile blade, try the CS Mini Tuff Lite. It's small enough for the "hidden thumbnail" trick but still affords a four-finger grip if you use the choil. Treat the clip as I've suggested above and you'll be good to go.

I am trying to count up the number of Subcoms I have owned, and it is distressingly similar to the number I have lost or given away. Nine or ten total maybe? One of those is the Titan, one is the Decade edition, two I bought from average gimp because he took pity on when I was whining about the Wharncom being discontinued (thanks AG!), all the rest were plain vanilla in various blade shapes (no Responders though). I never had a bad one out of the box, and the only one to develop any issues was a small rocking on the Subclaw after a few years of use. There is always the risk of getting a bad one slip through QC, but if that is the only thing holding you back I would say it's worth it. Cold Steel Mini Tuff is another fine option, and if you are looking for non-threatening it comes in colors. For some reason, my orange handle mini tuff has been called "cute" where a black-handled Subcom gets the fisheye. Go figure. Can't go wrong with either one.

Just ordered the CS mini tuff lite. Shoulda got the green but paid $18.00 which in which included shipping! The subcom is now on my list. Keep the advice coming :peaceful:

Aloha and welcome Gymbeam,

Too late to jump in on this, but I was gonna recommend the KeyCom. It is the only folder I know of in it's size class with a pocket clip. VERY discreet, but if you are spotted using it, the likely reaction would be how, "cute" it is.

Appreciate the fact that the SubCom is on your list, but look into the KeyCom. I have gotten away with using it as a main carry blade many times.

Be safe!

Oh yeah...thank you for answering Gymbeam's question average gimp and BitingSarcasm...you guys are great!

If you are interested in a KeyCom, I find that the pocket clip it makes a great pocket dangler for your keys or other small gear, to make it easy to get to and keep it out of the bottom of your pocket.

Here's what I did with mine - attached a Fenix flashlight to it. I clip the KeyCom to my right front pocket, leaving just that tiny clip (not visible in this pic since it is on the other side) showing. Then just grab it and I have either my flashlight or the KeyCom.

The Case knife in the pic was one that I was carrying at the same time that I took that pic, and to give some size perspective.

This was my typical daily pocket load out at one point in time. Gives a little better perspective on the size.

Aloha jc57,

Thanks for the size comp. Great pics! I have a bead blasted KeyCom with an ARC light attached in almost the same manner. Must look into that Fenix you have on yours for my KeyCom Black, they're great lights. Love the avatar BTW...looks like a cat I rescued.

Mahalo for chiming in!

The mini tuff lite just disappears in my pocket. Added short some braided paracord to it to help locate it after trying the clip for a couple weeks. The clip was pretty obvious and started to wear my pants pocket so the cord was a nice addition. Outside of work I have been carrying the Opinel #8. I guess it's practical application for me.
