How does Boker compare to the old pocket knives that have the good carbon steel? I'm thinking about getting a Boker stockman with appaloose bone. Thanks

Boker is a very good bargain. The "Tree Stamp" and "Tang Stamp" series both use carbon steel blades. Do a search and you'll find a lot of good info, some very recent.

texasboy, I have 2 Boker Barlows, a trapper, a slimline trapper, and a sodbuster, plus a few I probably forgot. All have carbon steel blades and all are wonderful users. They hold an edge just as well as the older Schrade Walden, Camillus and Kabar folders I sometimes carry. In my book them and Case make the best carbon blades at the moment. Joe

Maybe sucks was the wrong word. I got a Case stockman from BPS a couple weeks ago and it was dull, nicked and I can't get it sharp. Maybe it was just the supplier not the product. I didn't mean to affend anyone just stating my opinion based on my limited experience. Sorry if I affended you Paraglock.

Compared to the oldies, most of the Cases and Bokers made now are just as good if not better than the oldies. The Case factory edges need some work. Once you get it sharp, it's really good.

Sorry if I affended you Paraglock.
No real offense was taken, but thank you.

It's not that I'm such a huge Case fanboy I that I "can't stand to see their good name impinged", or that kind of thing. Yours just seemed a rather abrupt comment for this forum, given the number of people who do like Case knives around here. Valid criticism is always acceptable, as is varying personal taste (for the most part... ;)).

But again, apology accepted, and please consider yourself welcome around this folksy old place.

Perhaps you should do some self examining of your sharpening techniques?

I'm guessing you'll be happy with Boker. I prefer their carbon steel to all other production manufacturers. Not everyone likes Case steel. I didn't care much for Case until two recent purchases proved to me that Case is indeed capable of making a quality knife again.

You can continue to dislike Case if the steel just doesn't get sharp for you. Perhaps next time you could present your opinion in a less aggressive manner and you'll receive better feedback. This forum is one of the few places on the net where people seem to keep things polite and courteous. I see enough pi$$ing contests and nasty arguments on the boating forum that I frequent.

I have just received a Boker Tortoise Shell Whittler that I ordered on Sunday. The fit and finish look perfect to me. Carbon steel blades have half stops and open with a snap. Not as sharp as I would like but pretty good. I've been to Michaels for some bass wood, a little more expensive then I think it should be, oh well. And I am well stocked on band aids and hydrogen peroxide so it's time to do some whittling. I'll let you know how it holds up.

While I don't have much trouble getting my Case knives sharp, I have that problem with my Boker carbon blades. I can never quite seem to get them sharp. Except for that one canoe. Would that be one of those, "Different strokes for different folks," kind of puns? :D

I still like my Bokers plenty, but just know that they are a "challenge" to me.
