Hi Christof:

I just received your mini bolo in the mail and I am looking forward to putting it to work. Quite by chance, I noticed that you have pictures of another bolo in the thread here on the use of Ipe for handles. I really like this variant on the bolo, too. Could you perhaps post a consolidated thread on the knives that you have made that fall under this general design?

The mini bolo that I just received has very little in the way of a point--more along the lines of the USMC medical corpsman blade. The other bolo design of yours that I refer to above has a point that is more along the lines of the WWI army bolos.

This is my first knife with the weight distribution fairly far forward on the blade and it sure feels as though this will be a great knife for camping. There is a lot of chopping potential here, even though the blade is only 6.5 inches.

I don't want to finish this post without mentioning that the fit and finish of this knife is simply fantastic. Thank you for your fine workmanship!

Regards,

Geoff

I'll definitely work on getting all the photos together, I've got one more of this style that's being worked on right now, and I may wait until I have that handle glued up.

I go back and forth on the point a bit. I found that the almost round tip is really nice with game, fabric, and leather cutting. pointy tips are very worth having, too...

I've got an ironwood handled bolo that's looking very good, but I can't photograph it until KG is done with the sheath on that one.

I'm working on ... I've got 2 more heat treated, one hopefully for me. I'm getting very addicted to testing the blades and these are proving to be extremely useful short choppers. the blade from 5.5 up to 8 are all working fine, and I'm planning to add one to my EDC when I can - as of Saturday we'll be moved into Santaroga (the ranch name) and I'll be filling in the shop and finishing work.

Here's the last long one I photographed- not a minibolo, but a bolochete. I've got more of these I'm working on and Joezilla has the contest one for "extended life testing"

Here's one fo the shorter ones. This one was particularly compact at I think about a 7 inch blade. Ipe handle and a little light filework. Also the earliest of the 1/8 inch 15N20 steel. Hope I can keep getting that in!

This one came in right near 8 inches on blade with a longish handle and I did a pointier tip style. 1/8 1080, and maple crotch scales.

That one- all of them so far- is 1/8 thick. It matches the idea pretty well. I could do thicker, have to think on it a bit.

That last one looks like a great camp tool. Love the handle too.
